I have been using NERO 5.5.10.56 to burn DVD-ROMs for a while now using a Pioneer 107. I upgraded to a Pioneer 111D and now Nero does not recognize it as a recording device. The new drive doesn't show up on the list of available devices. However, it *does* show up when I have Nero do a media info check and Nero correctly reads the disc info, but not when I try to change recorders.
I have successfully burned DVD video with this new drive using DVD Shrink-DVD Decrypter and I have successfully burned data using copy2dvd (trial version).
Do I need to upgrade Nero? I really hate to since I just use it for data burning. copy2dvd works but I don't care for the user interface. Any other programs suggested to just burn data/iso's (preferably cheap/free)?
Thanks!

Yes, you need to update Nero. There have been two major versions of Nero since 5.5.Originally Posted by Gildor57

Completely false. Nero is included with most drives.Originally Posted by aedipuss

No, you don't need to upgrade Nero. Like you, I was using version 5.x, and it wouldn't recognize a new drive. I found that for burning purposes, freeware was just as good, sometimes better.Do I need to upgrade Nero? Use Folder2Iso to create data iso's, ImgTools Classic (make sure it's the Classic version) to create video iso's, and use ImgBurn to burn the iso's. All are freeware. -
Update Nero to version 6 or 7, yes.
Nero is hard to beat when it comes to burning software. I don't know what some of these detractors are going on and on about.
Nero has issues with burning DVD-VIDEO format UDF/ISO VIDEO_TS folder structures sometimes, that is true. And you should never use it for authoring VCDs or DVDs. But then again, nowhere did he mention video. His post specifically mentions data and ISO files.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Cost. It has been my observation that most of these people seem to think freeware is free. Most never even read the part about that if you find the product useful to please consider a contribution to the author(s).Originally Posted by lordsmurf

I agree. That's so sad. Same for all the free information sites like this one.Originally Posted by ROF

oh come on, it dates back to nero never having been able to burn cd-rom mode 2 properly and their refusal to fix it. i suppose if it came with a drive and you knew no better then you might use it, but there are other apps that are better at everything nero does.

Which app out there does everything nero 7 does and better?Originally Posted by aedipuss

You might want to step into the present. Nero has gotten better over the years. I have no problem burning anything with Nero, including Video DVD's. I have been a Nero user since 5.5. I now use Nero 7.Originally Posted by aedipussBelieving yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

The OP says he wants to "just burn data/iso's". To do that, he certainly doesn't need the 19 application "suite" that is Nero 7.
-
i didn't say there is one app that is better than nero but there are apps (plural) to replace everything nero does that are better than it. i am quite well into the present but nero still can't burn a simple vcd or svcd properly. heck if i would trust it to burn dvd data in real dvd spec iso/udf bridge format. not to mention the quality video it will transcode for ya. haha. it's all yours, you can keep it.

Hm? I burned somewhere around 30-50 (or more (I never counted, but I do know I stored them in at least two 25-disc spindles)) VCDs using Nero 5 and 6, and the only problems I ever had with any of the discs was when I let Nero re-encode the video for the VCDs. Otherwise, they were all proper VCDs.

Yes, it does. I have burned many vcd's, svcd's and dvd's with Nero. They all work on my stand-alone players.Originally Posted by aedipussBelieving yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

He asked if he should update Nero. The response is yes, because 5.5 does not support his burner.Originally Posted by VegasBudBelieving yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

Funny, I never had any problem with this option when it was useful back in the previous millenium. The present? You simply must be joking. The present of optical burning is dual layer DVD discs and high def discs.Originally Posted by aedipuss

Gildor57,
Welcome to Videohelp. You certainly have one of the most...unique...first posts I've seen here. The good news is you did get lots of replies, so the answer to your question is most likely in here somewhere. -
Gildor57 did your PIONEER 111D drive come with a OEM version of NERO BURN 6? If it did you can just install NERO BURN and not install the WHOLE SUITE. I did this with my retail PIONEER 710 which is a PIONEER 111 drive. I didn't need all the WHOLE NERO SUITE.
-
First off, many thanks for all the replies! I have indeed found out why Nero is failing (5 doesn't support DL drives).
Secondly, I apologize for asking a question which has caused a "spirited debate"
. That certainly wasn't my intent.
I got the drive OEM at a computer show here in LA, so it didn't come with any burning S/W.
For my video needs I currently go the DVD Remake Pro, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter route. In addition to a playable DVD, I also backup my DVD's to 1 or 2 DVD 5 disks as straight DVD-ROM data. This is where I was using Nero. I also use it to burn the DVD when DVD Decrypter would occasionally fail to burn the ISO.
I don't mind paying for software, but I just didn't want to pay for a lot of capability I didn't need, which is why I asked about alternatives.
Again, thanks very much for the replies! I haven't decided yet what I will do, but I'll probably try out some of the suggested programs before I decide whether to get the latest Nero. -
There's an alternative to installing the whole suite called Nero 7 Lite. Gives the user control of what gets installed.Originally Posted by VegasBud
