Right i have this file that is supported by Nero and is 1.7GB.

The disk's im using are standard 4.7GB DVD-R, but when i try ripping the 1.7GB film wont fit onto the disk

I'm a but confused since the disk is almost 3 times the size of the file!

    GSpot and https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=271697 .

My guess is that Nero is re-encoding the file.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Are you using Nero Burning ROM (or Nero Express) and burning in DVD-Video mode (I'm guessing not since you're using an MPEG file), or something else (NeroVision Express, etc) ?

Use the latest GSpot Beta (V2.52) to get specs such as frame sizes, frame rates, etc etc.

I still maintain (from the limited info you've given) that the file is not compliant and that Nero wishes to re-encode it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

That's a SVCD mpg you got there, and isn't DVD compliant.
Run it thru svcd2dvd or svcd2dvdmpg, and author with TDA, or some other real authoring app.

VCD video is DVD compliant, yes. SVCD video isn't. You have a SVCD video.
If you run it thru svcd2dvdmpg, the SVCD mpg wil be altered to appear DVD compliant to most authoring apps, letting you author it as DVD anyway. It will play in a vast majority of players without problem.
DVD-Lab will also author it as is, giving you a warning.
