I have a video capture card, but have found capturing video directly onto DVD a lot better quality.

I have several problems with this.

    1. The clips I record do not all save as seperate VOB files.
    2. The VOB files split randomly it seems - sometimes in the middle of a clip.
    3. The only editing program I have will not take VOB files but AVI.

I want to split my camcorder snips into seperate workfiles so that I can snip and cut these into some sequence before burning them back to a dvd for the final cut.

The camcorder is a Hi8 analogue video camera - I have not managed to enter the 21st century yet.

Can anyone tell me how I can seperate the clips I want into individual AVI files (WITH SOUND) simply so that I can use something like Adobe Premiere or Microsoft Movie Maker.
I have an early AdobePremiere from my Win95 days which will let me do some editing though I think Microsoft MM is more updated.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  2. The best way is to capture your video in DV format for editing with video editing software.
There are capture boxes out there that take analog video and convert it to DV format then transferred to PC via Firewire.
The second way is to get a digital camcorder and you can use it as pass thru device (does same thing as the boxes above), on top of that you have a new digital camcorder for your own use (this is my current method). It's the best.
The third way is to get a stand alone DVD recorder to capture your video and make DVD from there (editing is very limited).

There is editing (cuts only) and there is editing (cutting, filtering, transitions and effects).

For the former there are tools to edit Vob files and reauthor a DVD.

For the latter, you want to capture in higher quality, edit, filter and apply effects in high quality and only after all that is done do you encode to MPeg2.

Capture methods that exceed DVD recorder are:

    1. Capture through a DV transcoder to DV format over IEEE-1394.

    2. Hi8 playback on a Digital8 camcorder directly to DV format over IEEE-1394.

    3. DV pass through on a Mini DV or Digital8 camcorder DV format over IEEE-1394.

and 4. Uncompressed capture (or capture to huffyuv) for editing in an uncompressed editor.

Each way has issues but the results should be good.
