  1. Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a problem occured with digital copyright protection.

I am getting that error message when I want to play a DVD movie (store bought) in my computer. I am getting similiar error messages about digital copyright protection when I try playing the DVDs in RealPlayer also. I tried a few different DVDs already.

What do I do to play DVDs on my PC?

I'm guessing you're trying to play directly off the DVD disc ?

What happens if you rip a disc to your hard drive (DVDFab Decrypter) and then try to play it ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

You didn't mention true dvd playback product's .. and it sound's like a problem accuring from rce protection on the disc's .

Have you ever unlocked the drive region ?

If so , your drive may be stuck in region free mode ... and will not load the dvd ... usa is region 2 .

This is not a software issue , but a problem caused by playback drive bios lockout ...

    Here is some info :
    http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/dvd/regions/regions.php

From what I can see , new drive's made after 2006 are rpc2 enabled ... drive's before this are rpc1 enabled ... these new drive's appear to have only 5 allowance's where region code can be changed before finally locking ... option's .

Under warrantee - take it back ... bs salesperson that the software kept asking for region code , after fifth disc , it wont play no more ...
pro way ... bios hack and flash update to reset count .

If all above fail's , buy another drive (and leave it locked in region 2 - for playback only)

    Back to software :

You can pickup powerdvd in ebay cheap ... I could have bought 100 for $100.00au the other week .

    Try out :

    Koolplaya .

    Then you need decoder's :

    Video :
Freedvdcodec ... may be hard to find ... other's
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Dscaler_5
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=GPL_MPEG-1_2_Decoder

    Audio :
    Ac3filters , for audio decoding
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AC3_Filter

    Subtitle's :
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=VSFilter_DirectVobSub

    See how it gose ...

They should , but remember when a drive's region is unlocked for the purpose of ripping content , this can only be done so many time's ... after this ... as mentioned before .

It is not a problem within the os , or the chosen choice dvd playback software ... it is determined by the dvd drive's bios .

In this case , if they keep forcing the issue , it may be as simple as having more than 1 dvd unit in pc .

    1: Unlocked ... ripping
2: Second unit locked to local region for playback of dvd's .

    ----------------

As far as region coding is concerned ... it's theft in my book's ...

If my money is good enough to purchase a title in usa , japan , holland , other ... then I should beable to enjoy my purchase without being infringed upon by region coding .

After all , you can buy anthing else from around the world with out such hassle ... it's just a way of jacking the price's up and keeping them there ... something our government in au has had a go at in the last few year's to bring price's down ... on all media ... not that it's worked .
