  1. Ive downloaded some movies that are QT avi's they play with MPlayerOSX2 fine but not with QT6.5 under 10.3.9

they won't open in QT if I click on their icons, I get the beach ball and eventually force-quit.

any ideas? Id like to learn why. don't know how to tell you what the movies are as I can't open then even in finder, the get info hangs.

    cheers

MPlayer OSX will show some media info when using the (i) button in the playlist window. That may help finding out what codecs are used.
It could be the Get Info window hangs because QuickTime is used for the Preview part of the Get Info window. Close that part by toggling the triangle with a Get Info on another (non-media) file.

You need to install the relevant Quicktime components (to whatever codecs were used in creating the AVIs), for Quicktime to be able to play the videos. mplayer and VLC use their own codecs.

VLC has a file information/properties dialog that can tell you more information about the videos and what audio/video codecs they use. I'm not sure how (or if) the OS X version of mplayer does it, as I never really used it.

The codecs you're most likely to encounter are probably DivX and XVid. You can find the DivX Quicktime component at http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/codec/ . For XVid, there's more than one QT component, and I'm not sure which I'd recommend. Others may recommend 3ivX, but I'm not sure about it, personally.

  4. you were i think correct. on opening the two items in VLC the video component is XVID. in my library->QT-> I have 3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX and AC3 codec for macOSX and AC3 Codec.component and a folder Divx Encodeer.component -> DivxEncoder.

the audio for the two files: via VLC: codec a52

is my 3IVX dated? should I look for somthing else? Im happy to play the files in either VLC or MPlayer, but would like to learn why QT fails here for me

    cheers again

    rotus,
more than likely your AC3 decoder is.
3ivxD4.5.1 still works great for most of my xvids,
all my DIVX process through the DIVX 6 components that came
    with Toast 7.

Go get the new one, released oh, a couple of days ago
    STF for the link.
