I am having difficulties with my Sony DVD burners and I am looking to change them out with different brands.

I want a burner that allows me to change the Booktype and has a good reputation for quality.

    Any suggestions?

Choose the cheapest burner available. Most if not all will allow you book type your +r media. Just don't pay over $40 or $50 for a DVD Burner. It's just not worth it.

Pioneers won't booktype, either. If booktyping is a must, get a Benq.

Incorrect information. The PIONEER 110 & 111 have the capability to booktype to DVD-ROM for single layer media as well as dual layer. This can be done by using 3rd party firmware which is from "The Dangerous Brothers" website. I have a 111d drive that was successfully flashed to the 111L drive.

First of all what is the model of the SONY drive that you have. The SONY 810A drive is a rebadged BENQ 1640. The SONY 810A drive can be crossflashed to the official BENQ 1640 firmware by using WinDWFlash or BQFlasher program. Check out the BENQ FORUM and do a search. I have rebadged BENQ 1640 drives that were successful in crossflashing the drive to the official "B" series firmware.

Check the SONY FORUM at Cdfreaks.com for information on the drives that you have. The 828A maybe a rebadged LITEON drive. LITEON drives have the capability to booktype to DVDROM by using a tool that they provide. You'll be able to get more information at the LITEON/SONY forum at Cdfreaks.com. I suggest you join their forum and post your question there.

Here's a link for hacked firmware for your 800A Sony drive which is a rebadged LITEON 1693S

I know, but I was just assuming stock firmware. For me it's never been worth the fuss of finding the renegade firmware and the proper update program, etc., etc. I just figured he might as well get a Benq for the same price and not have to mess with it. Less headache. Don't get me wrong, I love my Pioneer drives (109 & 110d), but the occasional need for bitsetting is why I keep my Plextor 740A (Benq 1640) around.

I have the NEC ND-3550a and it's excellent. $35-$37 from chiefvalue.com, depending on color. Videohelp's listing says it can't booktype but I think it does (it would normally default to DVD-ROM anyway).

The LG-416* series should also meet your needs, but mine has it's layer-2 write capability fail after just a dozen DL burns, making it a permanent single-layer drive.

It's not hard to find 3rd party firmware when it's easily accessible by just typing in GOOGLE. BENQ has it's own share of 3rd party firmware which is great to use. BENQ has QSUITE which is a good tool to use for burning dvd media. Some rebadged BENQ drives are loaded with OEM firmware which are not updated as regularly as the official BENQ firmware. Which is why crossflashing a OEM firmware is best so one can use the official firmware. I've crossflashed many BENQ drives for myself and for pc's that I build for others. In my opinion it's not a diffcult task to do which includes Pioneer drives as well.

A look at the media reports on this site should provide a different perspective. Lots of reports of "poor media" from NEC, Pioneer and Benq, when LG and Samsung work well.

If you are a media switcher by nature, shopping by price, consider these reports.

Or you could just buy GOOD media like Taiyo Yuden and then you could buy ANY burner. All I use is Taiyo. I have a Pioneer 110-D (flashed to 1.41)

  21. My Pacific Digital (rebadged Benq 1620) has been excellent.
And I just picked up a Hi-Val (rebadged Benq 1650) which I expect will also be a good performer.
I went for the 1650 because I understand it has some firmware learning capablities reducing the need for firmware updates in order to properly burn new media. Of course a $30 price on sale/after rebate helped also.
Both of these drives offer manufacturer supported booktype setting on +R media via a setting in the firmware (ie. 3rd party firmware not needed and you only have to set it once).
