I am having difficulties with my Sony DVD burners and I am looking to change them out with different brands.
I want a burner that allows me to change the Booktype and has a good reputation for quality.
Any suggestions?

Choose the cheapest burner available. Most if not all will allow you book type your +r media. Just don't pay over $40 or $50 for a DVD Burner. It's just not worth it.

I have a couple of Sony's that do not allow me to change booktype....

Pioneers won't booktype, either. If booktyping is a must, get a Benq.

LG will booktype....

Any success flashing Sony drives with 3rd party firmware to allow this?
Anyone know?DAG123 -

Take a look at the BenQ.
Love all 3 of mine

I have a bunch of the NEC burners they are the best I have ever used!

I know, but I was just assuming stock firmware. For me it's never been worth the fuss of finding the renegade firmware and the proper update program, etc., etc. I just figured he might as well get a Benq for the same price and not have to mess with it. Less headache. Don't get me wrong, I love my Pioneer drives (109 & 110d), but the occasional need for bitsetting is why I keep my Plextor 740A (Benq 1640) around.

The LG-416* series should also meet your needs, but mine has it's layer-2 write capability fail after just a dozen DL burns, making it a permanent single-layer drive. -

A look at the media reports on this site should provide a different perspective. Lots of reports of "poor media" from NEC, Pioneer and Benq, when LG and Samsung work well.
If you are a media switcher by nature, shopping by price, consider these reports. -

And I just picked up a Hi-Val (rebadged Benq 1650) which I expect will also be a good performer.
I went for the 1650 because I understand it has some firmware learning capablities reducing the need for firmware updates in order to properly burn new media. Of course a $30 price on sale/after rebate helped also.
Both of these drives offer manufacturer supported booktype setting on +R media via a setting in the firmware (ie. 3rd party firmware not needed and you only have to set it once). -
