Hi there....recently I've been trying to convert hdtv to dvd....the hdtv is 1920x 1080i and i decided to make into an interlaced dvd, so the resolution is 720x480.....the problem is....i am able to export to vdub, but the video scaling down to 720x480 makes cracky edges or.... the words are kinda cracking...but the picture is fantastic.....but overall...i tried all 3 bicubic, bilinear and precise linear...all either cause cracking problem, or obvious blur effect....what filter can i use to scale from hdtv res to dvd res without causing such problem? ..not to mention....scaling in tmpgenc also gave the same craking effect, while procoder....no need to say , will produce the worst results of all (we all know procoder scale down video filter sucks) .... any idea what i should do ? Thanks in advance.

If you scale up, something like a Mitchell filter will give better results than a Lanczos filter (balance between ringing artifacts and sharpness), if you scale down, the Lanczos filter usually gives better results. Use the Lanczos filter.

post a pic of what you are describing and i can give better advise ..

also - if the source was wmv , a lot of times it will have a lot of issues in rescaling ....

I've had good results using ConvertXToDVD, it accepts HDTV directly, if its one file or multiple files. Just select the first file and it does the rest

It creates the files ready to burn on a single DVD-5 or DVD-9 or burn the DVD for you, and can even add a simple menu on the DVD if you are converting multiple video clips to DVD

Reasonably fast depending on the quality setting you use and of course how fast your system is

It can also convert quite a few other formats to DVD as well. Seems to be one of the better pieces of software that actually manages to keep audio in sync if you wish to convert xvid/divx to DVD

Its not free, but if you want one piece of software to convert any HDTV regardless of PAL or NTSC then give it a try

Are you using interlaced resizing? Both source and destination seems to be interlaced so the fields should be resized separately. But the offset in height between upper field and lower field is smaller at 1080i than at 480i so I think you need to adjust for this offset somehow. Maybe do a bob deinterlace first to get 60 fps, rezise to 480 and then discard half of the lines to make upper and lower fields and weaving back to interlaced.
