  2. Chapter 2 of the manual says yes, it is on the bottom of the front panel just to the right of the USB type A and type B.

    I just called Pioneer.
IT DOES NOT HAVE DV IN. PERIOD, AND UK VERSION ALSO DOES NOT HAVE IT. It was removed for this version. and the guy said last recoder they are making once blur ray come out.

So I think I'm going with Toshiba.

  5. Thanks for your email.

The DVR-540HX-S does not have a DV input, you can connect the camcorder you have via composite or S-Video connections depending on the connections your camcorder has.

We will have 2 further units later this year that will feature DV inputs, larger hard drives and other more advanced features.

I believed this to refer to the 640.

People get so caught up with the DV input but you don't need it ... when you use the analog out of a digital camcorder and you convert that straight to MPEG-2 DVD spec ... you get the same quality as if you had used the FIREWIRE or DV out of the cam.

You really only need the FIREWIRE for a computer connection.

Pioneer DVD recorders kick ass ... I love my Pioneer DVR-531H-s and yes it has no DV in port.

sorry Fulci, did not understand that. I like the luxury of plugging the camcorder right in the DV recorder. Are you saying that could done in another way with the Pioneer?

All digital camcorder's feature analog output which usually uses S-Video along with stereo RCA outputs for stereo.

When you are converting straight to MPEG-2 DVD spec the quality will be the same to the naked eye whether you used the ANALOG out or the DV out of the camcorder.

It's not such a big deal to use the FIREWIRE in this instance.

I think Pioneer has got one of the best DVD recorders out there but I must admit that from what I have seen (still images from various recordings) the Toshiba DVD recorders (at least the D-R4 and the RD-XS34) appear to perform very well and I think both those models have FIREWIRE if that is THAT important to you.

I like having the Firewire DV input on my Pioneer recorder and am a little miffed with Pioneer for dropping this convenient feature.

However, I do admit that connecting via S-Video and separate audio cables does get the job done nicely. In fact it offers the additional benefit of enabling the capture of the time/date display (should I want that?) and I can use the Pioneers many video image controls to adjust the incoming picture.

One advantage of using the DV Input on my Toshiba HDD DVD Recorder is that it can automatically add chapter points at each date change or at each pause point. It's not frame accurate, but it's close enough for what I need and extremely convenient.

thanks Fulci that made sense now. thankfully, the Toshiba is ok from what you and others say, cheaper than Pioneer, so it worked out.

  12. Yep, it has been confirmed that they do not have the DV input. They started shipping this model out a few days ago. Bummer
