    dougray,
I have two capture devices. One is an ATI 9600 and the other is a PVR 250 USB. I personally prefer the PVR but it does not capture AVI. I have not found the need since its MPEG2 captures are very good. The ATI card does all three and does a very credible job. However, I just do not like the program for setting up timed recordings. I find it to be very cumbersome. That is why I prefer the Happauge recorder.
Both cost less than $150 give or take a few schekels.

Take a look at avermedia ... a few good option's , good to very high quality capture .

    I own both the pci dvdezymaker gold ($70.00au) , and avertv usb2 ($120.00au) ...

Both work well with nero vision express , and ulead video studio (better)...
    Device's come with neodvd (cut down version) , but no restriction ... mpeg1 , mpeg2 , avi .

Take a spin about ebay - computer - video , you might find some around if you cant find them anywhere locally nearby .

Ulead video studio 9 se / nero there as well .
