I received a DVD-R from a trading partner. It freezes at a certain spot. I looked at the disk closely under a light and you can see a "stripe" going around the disk (I assume that's the trouble spot). It looks like he must have had a write error while creating it. My question is: can the disk be saved? I tried copying it to a DVD+R with Roxio Easy DVD Copy and it copied successfully (no stripe), but the copy also freezes in the same spot on playback. I assume that the original physical disk error became a logical error on the copy.

try dvdfab decrypter. It can be told to ignore physical read errors when it encounters them.

check the tools list at the right of the screen for download information.

ISOBuster is another good tool to try if Fab doesn't work. Has a lot of settings to toy around with to rescue discs.
