I am using virtual dub mod. When I click on filters none are shown. Where do I get some filters. I am looking for a way to brighten up some very dark avi files. thanks

None are shown? There must be a few, VDM comes with 20 or so and you can add a couple of hundred more.

Did you use the 'Add' button when in 'Filters'? They don't show till you do.

BTW, the default brightness filter sucks anyway, as it has no preview. I often use WhiteBalance Filter by Jim Leonard. It does brightness, color and a bunch more useful adjustments all in one filter. You can get it at this site: http://neuron2.net/ under 'Hosted'.

The 'levels' filter included with VDM is also a good choice. Just play around with the settings a little to get the effect you want, then preview it in motion with 'Preview filtered' in 'File'. Don't over filter or you can make things worse.

  4. Like Redwudz said, don't overdo it.

IIRC, the VDub Levels filter is exactly analogous to the Avisynth Levels command, like this common one:

    Levels(0,1.3,255,0,255)
#Corrects gamma for display in bright environment

So try setting output to 1.3 and preview it.

I've gone up to 1.5 with okay results, if that's insufficient then really a different filter is needed.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

    To Redwudz,

After I clicked on add all kinds of filters showed up. Your suggestion about the white balance filer did the trick for me. Thanks a bunch.

Good deal. Be careful with over lightning. A lot of AVIs show dark on a computer, but lighter when viewed on a TV.

If you are using VirtualDub or it variants, there are plenty of guides in 'Tools' listed on the VD page. It's a tool well worth learning, sort of the 'Swiss Army knife' of AVI tools.
