Audacity can do some noise removal, if you can isolate a sample of the problem for it.

I have the 40th anniversary edition of "The Quiet Man" which was a gift to me in 1994. Original movie came out in 1952. I have played it many times.

Finally captured it to my PC as Huffy compressed AVI.

The audio? Not so good. I used, don't laugh, http://www.droidinfo.com/software/depopper/.
There is a 30 day, full featured trial.

Saved the worst 5 minutes of the audio as a WAV using Virtualdub.
After trying a number of different settings I got a fair result.

Fed the whole audio in and was happy.

    p.s.
There was another step to it but I have forgotten what it was.

    p.p.s.
I remembered I used fairly soft settings as the fight scene at the end kept coming out sounding wrong.
