  2. You should consider a fresh XP install, to determine whether it is a SW or HW issue.

Perhaps your windows disc is corrupt. If you have reset your partitions and received no errors, formatted your hard disc and received no errors, and have reinstalled windows and still received no errors than it must be your windows software. BTW, if you have not done all three of the above you have not installed a fresh copy of windows. What you have done (and most people do) is installed windows over itself.

  5. It looks like you want to replace the jetway MOBO.

Jetway socket A boards were notably better than others. Why would you want to replace it?

  7. The PC basically die, after XP tried to load more kernel/applications. It is most likely a MOBO/Memory issue.

You are right. RAM test should be done first. The PC has 768MB, so it has a mixed RAM. The owner can plug in one memory module at a time, to identify any issue with any of the RAM. If that did not ID anything, then MOBO is the item to replace.

Don't know if your situation is the same, but I've had that happen
a few times. I disconnected the USB devices that were connected
to the PC and the problem was solved. Reconnected the devices after boot up.

(BTW, I'm using Win 2000, not XP)

As of last week SageTV Recorder (on C Drive) was taking 60-70 seconds to load at system startup. Then it hit me that I had not defragged in a while. After I did Sage starts in 15 seconds.

System can be funny thing's as they get on ...

My third install, xp refused my video card driver's (xp signed) , first 2 had no issue ...

My way to clean reinstall :

    Go into windows explorer , then tool's , view , show all file's and folder's .
Go to user account (your name) , zip up favourite's , transfer to portable usb device (simpler)
Go to local settings (under user account with your name on it)
    C:\Documents and Settings\"Name"\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\"Big Number"\Microsoft\outlook express
Zip up the content of this folder , transfer to portable device .

Next , write down all you internet account detail's to text file , transfer to portable device .
Go to program file's / outlook express , transfer copy of "wab" to portable device .

    Download manager's :

Most good one's have the ability to export your current download list , do so , transfer to portable device .
For those using filetopia , grab that filetopia.ini file , and zip that list folder , transfer to portable device .

Anything else is up for your discovery , I get too many call's on this stuff ...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Backup to cdr / dvdr

    If you use filetopia , download manager's , shareaza .... ectra ...

Did you know you can backup "partial download's" , those that have not completed as yet ?
Yes , they can be resumed without loss ... do I know stuff or what .

Visit the program's folder's you have installed , most have a default "partial" download folder , back this up to cdr .

    Reinstalling ... down further .

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Backup to cdr / dvdr , any thing of value to you now , pic's , music , sownload program's , ect ...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Clean reinstall of xp :

Visit your hd manufacturer's website for the diagnostic tool , and the install tool .
Search for "insert" , it's a mini linux distro packed with pc hardware testing tool's and program's .

Note : On insert , is a hd test tool ... if you find the one I am thinking of , and hit the correct button , the drive will sound like it is about too take off , just like a frizbee ... if it pass's all test's here , drive is ok ... most other diagnostic tool's have absolutely no idea what they are doing and report incorrectly .

    Let's go :

Use the hd install tool from manufacter site ...
Simple , for xp use ntfs , setup "2" partition's is my advice .

If you choose fat32 , there appera's to be from info around , that there is a limit on partition maximum size , being 36gig I think ... I have no problem's with 80gig fat32 formatted partition's under xp .

If fat32 is the way you wish to go ... considering some program's and game's wont install on ntfs , then as an example for 80gig , setup as 30:30:20 .
(no more than 3 partition's , or it could get messy)

Once the tool has set these up , insert os cd , remove the floppy , or cd (for those knowing how) , rebbot pc and proceed with new install .
When asked about partition's , tell xp too leave alone and too install as is .

    ------------------------------------------------

Once clean install is completed :

1: Install all mother board driver's (not usb2) , reboot
2: Install addon card's (modem's , video , audio , ect) , reboot as per request by system
    3: Install service pack 2 , reboot
4: Now install mother board usb2 driver's (only install them this way)

    Done ... well , to a point .

    -----------------------------------------------

Now grab yourself a good partition imaging tool ... this is why I said two partition's can come in handy .

Drive image require's either a second drive or partition to create backup image .
    Norton's ghost , now has better support for portable device's , and burner's .

Of course there are other's , use what you like .

The xp freeware one can be done over a network between pc's , but lack's compression abilities (available , but suck's)

What ever you choose , backup to media of choice asap ..

Note : Drive image can have pc backup and running in less than 5 minute's under certain condition's .

    -----------------------------------------------

    Now :

First , setup internet account details .
    Then , go to window's explorer , tool's , view , show all file's and folder's .
Now transfer backed up favourite's to favourite's under user account (your account name)
Transfer "wab" backup to where it was located before .
Visit the outlook express folder (as show above before hand) , and transfer backup data here .

    Bingo .

You have not lost favourite's , contact list from outlook express , and you have all your current email's back ... I am good .

Now , you need to reinstall thing's like download manager , filetopia ... ectra ...

For filetopia , install , just install .
when done , delete the filetopia.ini , and transfer your backup here .
Transfer that back list folder here as well .

    You now have your user name , password , friend's (contact's) , and all shared list's .

    Download manager's :

Install , then re-import exported download list .
Visit default folder where non completed download's where stored originally .
It is here you transfer those backed up partital download's too .

See , again , you lose nothing again .

    ==================================

Only now , do you install or your own program's , like nero , ulead , ect

    Then install utility program's (freeware)

Last , turn off system restore , reboot pc .
Turn on pc restore for C only .

    Last , scandisk on c , reboot pc .
    Finally , defrag c .

Dont forget to install and update antivirus .

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    My rule :

    1: Connect to net .
    2: Update antivirus FIRST .
3: Now you can do what the h??? you like .

    Virus infection's here : 1 in two year's
    Spyware : 8 in 3 year's .

It's got me stumped how people get their pc's so full of crap these day's , if they simply follow these rule's , they'd pretty well be ok .

    --------------------------------------------------------------

As for any other share tool's , it is up too you too discover how this proceedure can be applied succesfully to each program .

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    Now hardware :

Erratic startup's : mostly due to age .

1: Replace heatsink compound on cpu (not heat grease) , use the silver one (forget the name of it , in ebay cheap)
2: Clean memmory slot's on motherboard with suitable cleaning sollution .
3: Remove addon card's , and reinsert them (called "pc rott" , otherwise known as oxidization of connector's) (clean as for part 2) .
4: Check cable's ... they can behave erratically , esspecailly if they have been pulled in and out a number of time's .

5: Finally , power supply may not be performing as like when new , consider replacement .

    Other note's :

Western digital hd's are a pain in the ???? , esspecially those BB unit's (set these to CS only)
Maxtor follow close second (set to CS)

Other's from test's dont appear to have these problem's , so setting to master will be fine , if issue , set to CS .

One that get's missed quite often is the dreaded "reset switch" on pc case .
If this is in anyway , seem to be acting up , it must be replaced (normally , if button replacement cannot be found , then new case will be the way to go)

These thing's , on cheaper case's , have a habit of melting , causing alsort's of boot up erratic behavour ... something to keep an eye out for .
I mean , Very long beep , then 2 beep's .... ok , I looked this up and code dose not exist ... so what the f , is my pc up too .

    ==================================

Hopefully other's will see this post , and have a good understanding of how to do a clean reinstall , what backup's should be performed firstly , how system motherboard driver's are installed (esspecially usb2) , and how to reinstall their backup's .

And what they need to consider when partitioning their hd's .

If you read up of many game's and program's ... hiden away will be some info that say's specifically designed for fat32 system's ... may not run , or as well under ntfs ...

This is true if you actually bother to "READ" and "RESEARCH" about them ...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Finally :

For those not needing to go so far , there are registry cleanup tool's available that might be the ticket too a speedier system .

http://www.download.com/3000-2094-881470.html?legacy=cnet (regclean - dose also work for xp)

    And

    http://www.snapfiles.com/publishers/hover-inc/index.html

The first tool , the other's can be bonus's if you want them .

These should beable to hunt out registry hog's , and errant entries , it also make's a backup before doing any change's .

My advice , go to start , run , enter the word REGEDIT , goto file , choose export , export the whole thing (about 40mb's for some system's)
Backup this to poratbale device , just incase .

    ---------------------------------------------

Searching the internet should also turn up info on the system registry scanner for xp , during bootup ... if used correctly , it can snuff out errant registry entrie's that may be the cause of the erratic startup behavior .

There is also info on how to replace the registry with a backup , should the modified registry cause system not to complete the startup and enter window's .

I did have this , so off to search I go once more ... maybe this time , I'll print it off ...

    Ok , I am not god , but some consider my blood worth bottling ... I know , I gave 19 pint's ... and sometime later , I want them back ... lol .
