I'm trying an automatic crossfade between two stills i've stretched out on the video timeline by dragging the ends to overlap. Although i see the 'x' as i do that it disappears when i let go and theres no fade when i render. What am i doing wrong? I have automatic crossfades enabled..

maybe there's an audio track in the way somewhere?

check and see if you have the "Auto Ripple" option on (right next to the automatic crossfades button), if you do, it's moving the clips back to where they were before in relation to that spot on the timeline. You can either turn auto ripple off, or grab the whole 2nd clip (not just the begining or end) and move it to an overlapping position.
If this is not the problem, I don't know what to tell you.-Tevya
