  1. I've just got a rendering problem in Vegas (6.0c, but the it's the same problem in other versions). I want to use the wmv9 codec, which I usually do. Though I can't use it anymore. I don't really know why this happen, but I've checked the differences from when it worked fine.

Now the description says "No existing templates support this media." and if I try to pick a template I get a message like this: "The custom template you selected is not valid with the current project settings. It has been filtered out of the template list.". Also if I got to "Render As"->"Windows Media Video V9"->"Custom"->"Video", the format field is now empty, where it before said "Windows Media Video 9". Same in the audio tab, the format field is empty when I select Quality VBR.

I really want to solve this problem but I don't know how to. I've tried with different projects and by re-installing, but nothing have worked. Please help me solve it, I would really appreciate some help. I feel really bad because I've put hours on a project, but now I can't render it as planned.

    Thanks in advance.

you should post this in the vegas forum at sony as it sounds almost like a registration issue (really) , where there is a double entry in the registry ... or contact customer support

i would uninstall vegas - clean reg of all vegas .. reinstall and re-lic ... also update to 6(d) -- but customer support may have a better suggestion

I have contacted customer support, but no response so far. I've tried your other suggestion too (as good as I could), but I don't really know how to re-license it...

    Got any more suggestions?

This isn't a solution to your problem, but it is a work-around.

Go to Microsoft and download the Windows Media Encoder. This is a tool that gives you a lot of flexibility when encoding to Windows Media. It can encode from just about anything into a wide variety of WMV output.

Workflow from Vegas will then be:

    1) Edit video and encode to DV-AVI.
    2) Use the DV-AVI input as source to Windows Media Encoder and output WMV.

My Vegas encoder works fine, but I still use this method.

or frame serve it to WM encoder

keep in mind - that vegas and WME use exactly the same encoder to do wmv

  7. Thanks for the suggestions.

The project resolution and other settings doesn't matter, cause it's the same with all projects, even with the ones which worked before. I've got WME, but I haven't tried it yet. I don't really know what settings to use to get simular quality as I would get from Vegas. I've PMed you, terjeber, about this. Maybe you please can help me with it.

@BJ_M: What is "frame serve" and how do I do it?

Sorry, but I'm not that experienced when it comes to rendering/encoding. Thanks for your help and understanding.

Look at the debugmode frameserver in the tools section. It is a small application that you install into Vegas. When you go to render your project, you select to render to the frameserver. You select a file name, and create what is called a signpost file. You then start up WME, and instead of opening the video, you open the signpost file. WME thinks it has a complete video file, but it is really reading the Vegas timeline via the frameserver. Neat trick, and very handy.

I haven't been using WME, but when you say "...open the signpost file" you mean that I should choose "Add Source" and pick the file, right? Anyway, when I do it says "The source file 'C:\...\intro.avi" cannot be opened. Please check that it is valid and its format is supported.".

    What did I do wrong?

play the sign post file in media player classic .... if it ok there - WME may be one of the few apps you can not frame serve to -- it would be rare ....

Had this problem myself. Turned out to be that WMP 10 breaks Vegas 6.0 in that you cannot render to WMV.

To fix: Rollback to WMP 9. Here's how:
