  1. I recently reformatted with WinXP Pro SP2. I've installed Mediaplayer Classic v.6.4.8.6 and VLC player v.0.8.4a. I have an .avi and .srt, both named identically. When I played this .avi with the .srt before in either player, the subtitles worked. Now the subtitle option is greyed out in Media player classic. In "options > playback > output" I have the VMR9 Renderless checked for subtitle playback (media player). I don't know what else I can do?

  2. First you need to install DirectVobSub.
Then just follow the instructions on the page---> It mentions only WMP, but this works for other apps too..like Media Player Classic...etc.

  3. DirectVobSub worked with Media Player Classic, but not with VLC player. And even though subtitles are working with Media Player Classic, the "Play > Subtitles" is still grayed out. When all worked for me before, I never had DirectVobSub installed and my "Play > Subtitles" wasn't grayed out. I am wondering why this is?

  4. In Media Player Classic...if you go to Filters-->DirectVobSub-->......you will have a few options..such as "Hide Subtitles" or "Show Subtitles".
If you have more than 1 .srt file..for different languages, for example, then you should be able to go to Navigate-->Subtitle Language also.
The Subtitles option on the main menu is grayed out for me, as well.

Media Player Classic doesn't require dvobsub. It has an internal subtitle renderer. They (MPC and VSFilter) both actually share a fair amount of code.

Why v6.4.8.6 and not 6.4.9.0 or newer?

The reason why dvobsub doesn't work with VLC is because VLC is not dshow based. It also has its own subittle renderer though.

  6. I downloaded MPC v6.4.9.0 and I still need DirectVobSub to enable the subtitles. I tried downloading an older version of MPC (6.4.6.8) thinking maybe the subtitles option wouldn't be grayed out, but it was. I remember, even early last year that the version of MPC I had did not have the Subtitles option grayed out and I never had DirectVobSub installed back then either.

Subs should work fine as long as you are using VMR7/9 renderless or Haali's renderer.
