    I'm lost.

I have a LG 1920P Flatron LCD with both VGA in and DVI-I in.

I have an ATI All In Wonder 7200 AGP card (called "DDR32" at the time). According to ATI it has "DVI-I output (VGA monitors connect through DVI-I to VGA adapter - AGP version only)"

The LG came with a DVI cable. It may be a DVI-D, not really sure. It doesn't say.

When I plug the DVI cable into the ATI, I get a blank screen, no picture.

    What's wrong? Do I need a DVI-I cable?

DVI-I is both analog and digital and connects to either

maybe you have the wrong refresh rate on the ati -- set it to 60hz or whatever LG says ..

I think my cable is a DVI-D. But wouldn't that still work? Since both the card and the monitor do DVI digital.

I'll try to mess around with refresh rates, as soon as I can locate my cable again. I put it aside some weeks ago, didn't have time to fool around with it. Now I do.

DVI-I has both DVI-D (digital) and VGA (analog) pins. Maybe this monitor only uses the analog pins since it also has a VGA connector.

Not sure if this applies - different AIW card and display type - but FWIW......

When I first connected my AIW 9800Pro to my Sony TV via DVI, WinXP did not initially detect the new monitor and defaulted to "Default Monitor". This setting resulted in a black/blank screen.

After a reboot or two, the "Default Monitor" setting began working (poorly). In Display Properties|Settings, a new monitor choice appeared (Sony TV), but was not selected.

Manually changing the monitor to "Sony TV" may have improved display quality somewhat, but I had other issues regarding screen resolution - outside the scope of this discussion.

Perhaps a cold boot is necessary for the detection of some monitors.

Well, I have the LG drivers installed already, and have been operating with VGA connections for a couple months now. So not sure if what you just said applies, but thanks all the same.

I had been using the 9800Pro with the VGA adapter for a couple of months, although I was connecting it to a Sony MultiScan CPD-E540, not the Sony TV.

WinXP just didn't detect the new monitor for the first few bootups.

Does the same monitor with a different connection type = a new monitor to WinXP or the display drivers?

VGA and DVI can't be too terribly different if a small adapter can change one to the other.

Another thought /question - I hope I'm too far not off the deep end here.

Just because the manufacturers in question (LG and ATI) use a DVI-I connector, does it mean that the devices must use/have present both analog and digital signals? DVI-I can contain both, but does it have to?

If the design idea of the LG was VGA for analog only and DVI-I for digital only - and the AIW only outputs on the RGB pinout, then you would get the behavior that LS is experiencing.

I always assumed that there was a digital signal in the DVI-I output of my AIW 9800Pro card but I can't verify it. I reviewed the docs and it isn't mentioned explicitly.

I can't find a link to the LG LCD manual.

The AIW will have analog and digital pins avaialble as DVI-I. The device at the other end of the cable may respond to only the DVI-A (similar to VGA) pins or DVI-D (digital) pins. If the cable is DVI-D only, the analog signal woun't be carried.
