i am using TMPGEnc to convert an avi file (approx. 700 megabytes) to an mpg in order to burn to dvd.

i am using the NTSC 16:9 / CBR MP2 format.

when i get to step 4 of the project wizard, it shows me that the mpg cannot be less than 185% of the disk capacity of a 4.7gb dvd.

if i choose 8.5gb dvd, it will fit perfectly.

with the exception of this one, all avi's (up to file size 800mb) i have ever converted have fit on a 4.7gb dvd.

i'm not sure, but the following screenshot may help your diagnosis of the problem

anyone got a clue whats going on here?

316 min 19 seconds. 5 hours 16 min 19 sec. Is this the right running time of the AVI ?

Looks like the wizard won't allow you to go under 3000kbps. Cancel the wizard and you will be able to. But keep in mind that a video bitrate of around 1700kbps (assuming 192kbps audio) will require a frame size of 352 x 240 to look anywhere near decent IMHO.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. Yes, the problem is obvious without the screenshot.

The bitrate is too high for that length of playing time. Lower the bitrate or split the file, or get a DL disk. Bitrate calc will give you the precise answer, it will be quite low.

The AVI filesize is TOTALLY irrelevant. The run-time of the video is all that is needed to calculate the proper bitrate. Also recommend VBR.

max bitrate for that length dvd video is below 1500kbps. at vcd resolution of 352x240 it might be ok, but would take 7 cds. the original avi at 700mb is probably barely watchable quality anyway, so i wouldn't even try for dvd.

Depends on the calculator it would seem

    Wow, this is strange..

When I play the avi file on my PC, the program tells me it is only 1 hour and 48 minutes long. Why is TMPGEnc telling me it's over 5 hours long?

    Bingo!

Rip the audio to wav (Vdub) and use that as the audio source for TMPGEnc.

jimmalenko you really want to quibble over 1500 / 1600, when you didn't use the audio bitrate he specified in his post?

djtizzy you may want to demux like zippyp suggested, maybe with a proggie like avidemux, and save out the audio to lpcm wav.
don't use the tmpgenc wizard. input the video by itself and create an ES(elementary stream) m2v file. when you have an m2v and wav, import them into your dvd authoring proggie and create the dvd.

Who's quibbling ? Simply pointing out the discrepancies in error margins and allowance for overhead and "extras" the two calculators use.

Even with 384kbps audio, it still comes in at 1535kbps

And not to mention, 384kbps stereo MP2 is more than likely overkill for an AVI source of around 700MB.

It's a moot point anyway, since the video is only 1 hour 48 mins and it's probably VBR MP3 audio causing TMPGEnc to misread the length.

But back to the OP, http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/ExtractAudio.htm or https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=837#837 can assist with decompressing the audio to WAV. Then as aedipuss suggests, get out of the wizard in TMPGEnc and set it up yourself. http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm might help you with the process.
    If in doubt, Google it.
