I've got a BenQ DW1640, when using Recode I sometimes get a burn that says 100% but the drive stops responding. The light on the front of the drive stops flashing and I have to use the task manager to kill the program. The entire system isn't locked up, just recode and the drive.
I had a similar thing happen once when I tried to burn with DVDDecrypter and ImgBurn. With those programs it stopped responding at the end when it said "synchronizing cache". Any ideas what's happening here? Most of the time I can burn just fine but this is annoying.
thanks,
BGC

What type/brand of disks?

I don't think the media is an issue here I use clone dvd and decrypter and I have been having the same problem with drive stopping and the programs are non responsive won't exit etc. but this has happening while ripping and during writing and yes its frustrating and getting exspensive. So if anybody can shed any light on this it would be helpful. Thanks.

The discs are Fuji -R made in Japan, they show up as TYG02. From the posts I've seen these discs are excellent quality. It seems to me if it was the drive it would happen all the time or at least alot more often.
One thing I thought of was the cable, I used a round data cable instead of a ribbon type. The cable was a generic one, but except for these occasional freezups at the end of burning the drive has worked fine so I don't know if the cable would be the problem.
I plan on getting a second burner, mainly just so I have one to rip and one to burn. When I do that I may replace the cable with either a ribbon cable or at least a named brand round cable.
Thanks,

Figured mine out it had nothing to do with software, media, or the drive , one of the wire connections in the moldex plug of the power harness going to the drive was pulled loose and was making a very intermittent connection fixed her up and problem seems to have disappeared, just another avenue for you to look at. Thanks.

FWIW, I tried the fuji discs with the same media code, based on recommendations from this site, and got around 50% coasters. I got better than that from Princo when I first started burning, and get 100% perfect burns from Ritek G05s, which I still use.

Well, I'm out of the Fuji discs. I picked up some of the Verbatim -R at today so I'll see how those do.
When you guys use Shrink or Recode, do you set the output size to less than the DVD-5 size? I saw that suggested because of supposed lack of quality around the edge of some discs. I didn't do it myself because the discs were supposed to be a quality brand.

I don't. When I author I have taken some right to the edge without issue. Again, use quality discs with a good burner and these problems are a lot less. I find the Shrink default to be fine. If you start getting too paranoid then you will soon find yourself reducing the output size, burning at 1x, putting rubber dampers under your PC to stop traffic rumples juddering the drive, and all manner of other compulive behaviour.
