    Hi,
I wish to enquire what would be the best raw codec output mode which a brooktree capture card should be set to before its compressed by Huffyuv or another codec.

I have the following available :- RGB24 which consumes a lot of data a second YUY2 and YV12

According the the datasheets for the BT878 chip, data is upsampled to RGB24 from 4:2:2 so RGB24 would be a waste of time due to no gain in quality and very high bandwidth.

So which is better and what do people use YUY2 or YV12?

  2. YUY2 is a good choice if you want to compress with Huffyuv. YUY2 works with most codecs.

YV12 is downsampled to 4:1:1, so it has a bit less color precision, and it's not compatible with many compression codecs. At high frame sizes (like 720 pixels per line) the loss is negligible, so YV12 is still a viable alternative.

Generally you can find the best match by choosing a format and trying it with the codecs you want to use. Some versions of the PicVideo codec, for example, give a better picture from RGB24 than they do with YUY2--apparently a codec bug. So always give it a test run!
