I tried to use winxp to play certain dvd, but nothing happened when i inserted the dvd. the stand-alone dvd player and my old win98 could play it? does anyone why? if i'm missing so codecs? how to check what codecs i'm missing in order to play this dvd?

  2. I would suggest that when you had Win98 you had a software DVD player installed (PowerDVD, WinDVD etc) that would then allow WMP to play DVDs. Do you have such software installed now?

If not, a free media player that will play DVDs is Media Player Classic, but having this will not install the MPEG2 codecs which would allow you to play DVDs in WMP as well.

    Hope that this is helpful.

I have neither PowerDVD nor WinDVD installed in my WinXp, but I have Media Player Classic. I'd like to ask which MPEG2 codecs I need to installed in order to play DVDs in WMP.

XP comes without a MPEG-2 codec for playing DVD files, etc. But if you have a working MPEG-2 codec installed, there is no reason I know that you can't play the video off a DVD with the proper player. Can you play a MPEG from the hard drive? Just so you can tell if your DVD ROM isn't the problem?

You can download programs like DXMan or Codec Sniper to see if you have working codecs and get rid of the rest of them.

Having the K-lite codec pack installed could be a problem of it's own. It's been known to corrupt usable codecs and could mess up your system. Personally, I wouldn't let K-Lite near any computer I use. Do a all forum search for 'codec pack problems' and you may agree. And there are many similar posts.

But try the two above programs and they should be able to get your codecs in order.
