  1. I've just tested my LG4167B (configured as IDE master) drive's performance against my SONY DVD-ROM DDU1621 (configured as IDE slave) with some common testing softwares:

    http://www.geocities.com/come_mon_come_mon

The test results shocked me because it revealed data transfer rate of my new LG drive was even inferior than my old SONY DVD drive bought years ago.

I don't know why this happened (PS: I'd updated the latest firmware to my LG drive).

    Could anyone help me

check to see that your drive is in DMA mode. it sounds like it's stuck in PIO mode.

Most dvd-writers are slower in transferring data to the harddrive than dvd-roms.

But how to explain the test result ? Did the test results properly revealed my drive's performance ?

  9. This is a very unusual problem. I own an LG GSA 4167B and have had no issues like this (I have had it for a very short time though). There has to be some issue over-looked here. Please give as much info as possible about the hardware setup (motherboard, ide configuration, etc). The 4167B is not the best reader/ripper by no means but those timings you link to are unexplainable. I am no hardware expert but this looks to be more down that alley. Try this link possibly:

  12. That motherboard has both On-Board 2 x Ultra DMA 33/66/100 IDE Ports and an On-Board Promise IDE RAID Controller. VIA chipsets for North/Southbridge. Your screenshots indicate normal setup on primary and secondary ide channels. I know Promise controllers are considered to be problematic with optical drives but that Raid Controller does not factor in since it appears to be unused. I am at a loss here - way over my head. Maybe some of the guys with more hardware experience will chime in!

Question - Are you using VIA drivers or Microsoft XP supplied???

That previous link I posted earlier had comments in that thread somewhere that advised against using manufacturer supplied drivers vs. MS supplied ones (I think). As I said - this is beyond my ability to help anymore. Good luck - maybe someone else can help further. You might have better luck posting this kind of issue over at cdfreaks.com in their hardware forum section.

If you mean VIA Bus Master IDE Controller driver, it's Microsoft XP supplied.

After case reported to vendor & after long wait, they finally gave me reply. They suggested me to update my XP to SP2. So I did the upgrade. Afterwards, the DVD test results seemed normal (real burning time as well). I will post the result here later
