I have a LG DVD DL writer. Had it for about 2 months. It used to read DVD disc at a rate between 4.0 and 5.0. Now it can read faster than 1.8x. Didn't add or take out any programs. Even the write speed has decreased. I tried unistalling the hardware but no luck. Any solutions on how I can get it back to speed.

  2. How are you measuring read speed?

Is this PATA or SATA? Have you tried plugging it in a different port?

Does it read this speed on all DVD's of different media types?

Have you updated to the latest firmware revision?

Check your device manager to see if you are using PIO or DMA transfer mode

Do you mean your read rate slowed while watching a dvd or while ripping a dvd ??

Might have slipped out of DMA and into PIO.

Giving more specific details helps a lot 8)

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.

I mean the read rate when I am using DVD Decrypter. Just checked the IDE controllers and the secondary one has it in PIO mode even though it is set for DMA. I wil try an uninstall the channel and see if that helps.
