  1. If i copy a DVD to my hard drive and i want to edit it then rewrite it to dvd what is the best way to do this?

What i would like to do is to convert it to DV-AVI ---> Edit (save as DV) ----> MPEG2 --------> DVD

so as to loose as little quality as possible, but how do i converd a DVD to DV-AVI?

or use mpeg video wizard or tda for simplier editing directly from dvd vob files.

  3. The way you want to do it will involve re-encoding and therefor a loss of quality. Are you just looking to trim out parts or add parts, Then Baldrick's solution will work to edit although myself I would use VideReDo Plus.

OTOH if you want to edit out or change the soundtrack then you'll need to rip to the hard drive and go from there.

So basic question is what is your goal?

I would use VirtualDub Mod for that, myself. You will need to add a DV codec to encode to DV. The Panasonic DV Codec works well for me. If you want to add permanent subtitles, look here: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=272736 For the creation of the subtitles, check our Subtitle forum for ideas.

Be advised you will have 2 re-encodes. You will lose some quality with each. First to DV and second back to MPEG-2. You can frameserve the output of VDM to an encoder like TMPGEnc to save hard drive space and some time. VDM can accept VOB files directly. Then you don't have to convert them to MPEG first. Keep your bitrates high and you should minimize the loss.

Good luck on this, and let us know if it works for you.

To Do Subs cut and editing you can use MPEG video wizard. You could try it for free. That way you don't have to go back and forth between format and get all complicated.
    I want to believe....
