Are there any good programs out there...preferably free or inexpensive...that can convert an .avi to a .mov? I am not planning on making this a carrer but I'd like to convert a few clips so that they can be played in quicktime. Maybe I'd edit the clip in WMM and set up a few transitions etc. but most of the clips would be 10 minutes, max, in length.

    thanks

thank you. I DL'd it and converted a small clip I had. the video looks OK but the audio sounds like it is in slow motion.

I didn't know what setting to use so I left them at the defaults--the audio bit rate was set at 64kbps with a sampling frequency of 22050. Would changing these setting change the audio quality? I am assuming it would. But what settings are recommended?

Also the video settings were at 25 frames per sec and a bitrate of 1200kbps and my "options" were set for "hi quality." What are the preferred setting for video in a .mov?

    thanks again...

For Quicktime I'd go with .mp4 instead of mov. If you use MeGUI there is a quicktime AVC profile or just copy the settings.

Get Quicktime Pro. For $29US, it easily reads Type2 DV-AVI and can save as DV-MOV, no recompression loss at all. Just re-wraps the DV stream in a MOV container.
If you need to use Type1 DV-AVI, such as what WMM outputs, Get a Type1 -> Type2 converter. Ulead & Canopus both have apps that do this. (Ulead's is free, IIRC).

Thanks. I'll look at both of these programs but off the top , I'd say that while mp4 is attractive, MeGUI seems a little too complicated for what I want to do. I'm a newbie at all this and Super is...as you can see by my questions above...pushing my envelope already.

Speaking of Super...I still am wondering why my sound didn't convert--why it sounds like it is in slow motion (how can sound be in slow motion?). Super would be fine if I could just get that issue resolved.

Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?
