  1. I tried to convert a video file from MOV to AVI without recompression (stream copy for both audio & video) using SUPER. But the result AVI video couldn't be played.

    The MOV file link:

    Questions:
    1. Why the result AVI video file couldn't be played? but if I copy stream from MOV to MP4, the result MP4 video could be played. Is this because AVI cannot hold AAC audio?
    2. Anyone know any other better tool besides SUPER for copying stream from MOV to AVI or MOV to MP4?
    3. The reason I want to convert the video to AVI because I cannot play it using Media Player Classic (that come from K-lite mega codec pack), the video was not shown up at all. I've already tried many ways such as by installing latest quicktime and divx, but still no avail. Does anybody know what's the cause of this issue?

    Very-good question.

No. AVI-Mux GUI is able to properly produce AVI files containing AAC streams.
Both MPC and WMP will play them if you have ffdshow or CoreAAC installed on your computer.

  5. Try mp4cam2avi.
as he said or winff using -vcodec copy and/or -acodec copy depending on compatible container chosen.
mp4cam2avi couldn't convert the MOV file. It said "Invalid Floating Point Operation".
winff's result is same with SUPER since both of them use ffmpeg too.

AVI-Mux GUI is able to properly produce AVI files containing AAC streams.
I see that AAC isn't supported in AVI, but I haven't confirmed the AVI-Mux GUI. I think I will give up the AVI.
Any suggestion what's the best container used to hold the stream copy of my MOV file?

I've installed K-Lite Mega Codec Pack v4.6.2. It includes MPC-HC & ffdshow. But still cannot play the MOV file with MPC/MPC-HC or WMP. I can only play it with VLC Player.
The video didn't show up, only the audio could be heared. MediaInfo said the video codec is DX50 (DivX). As I said before, I've installed latest DivX Codec (v7) but still the video didn't show up.

I see that AAC isn't supported in AVI
    http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/en_myths.html says:

AAC in AVI does not work

This works beginning with AVI-Mux GUI 1.15.5 (1.15.4 had a bug with 5.1 AAC files). Those files play fine with Microsofts's AVI splitter as well as with Gabest's AVI splitter, neither of which has any special support for this. The used technique to store VBR in AVI is the same as with MP3. There are a lot of MP4 trolls, saying things like "you should not put AAC into AVI, it is a bad idea, MP4 is better for this, MP4 is more modern blah blah". Forget this nonsense, AAC in AVI is compliant to the AVI file specification.
    I've installed K-Lite Mega Codec Pack v4.6.2

because these quite often lead to the well-known "codec hell".

  7. @Midzuki:
Ok, so AVI can work with AAC audio. But in fact, I cannot play the AVI with the DX50 video and AAC audio. The symptom are like this:
    - After file opened, the video didn't play at all. It only showed first frame image.
    - The player showed incorrect time length (42:23).

This the MediaInfo of the AVI file resulted from SUPER:
    Code:

So what do you think the cause of this issue? Is this caused by K-Lite Mega Codec pack?
Do you have any solution for this issue?
Should I still stick with AVI or change to the other container?

Yep, it works fine to change to mp4 using xvid4psp(copy for video and audio). No reconverting and works in MPC.

  9. @dvstorm:
what tool do you use to convert the video to MP4?

    @Baldrick:
yeah, SUPER can do too. I was thinking to use MP4 too. My other candidate is MKV, but dvstorm and you choose MP4, so I will choose MP4 too. Thx.

However, I'm still curious about these issues:
    1. Why my MOV file couldn't be played by general player (WMP, MPC, etc)? dvstorm & Baldrick: can you play the MOV with WMP/MPC?
    2. Why AVI with video codec DX50 and audio codec AAC couldn't be played by general player (WMP, MPC, etc)? Btw, I've attached the AVI file (i3.avi) in this post (look at below).
Note: Both of my MOV and the AVI file could be played with VLC player.

    i3.avi:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8PNFCQP0

I hope someone can investigate these issues and confirm if they can be played with WMP/MPC. Maybe I'm missing some codecs or like Midzuki said there is "codec hell".

  10. I've found the explanation why there is no video in the MOV file:
    http://codecs.freeforums.org/no-video-shown-up-in-this-mov-file-t1314.html

Also have confirmed that the cause of the AVI with DX50/AAC couldn't be played because SUPER cannot handle the AAC correctly while AVI Mux-GUI can.

I guess mp4 would be better for editing. But both MKV and MP4 are not supported in many editors. And it also depends what video and audio codecs.

  12. Next thing I want to do that I have 2 scenarios in my head:
    1. I still want to transfer the A/V stream of MOV to AVI.
Since we know AVI can stream AAC audio well if the AAC is muxed using AVI-Mux GUI, I need help to know how to extract the video & audio stream from the MOV. Someone know the best tool for this task?

    2. I give up the AVI and decide to transfer the A/V stream of MOV to another container.
My biggest candidates for the container are MP4 and MKV.
So, I need to know which is better between MKV and MP4 in overall aspects (especially editing/trimming)?

    Thx in adv.

  13. Thx Baldrick for the suggestion for the issue #2.
Could you help me with the issue #1?

  14. 1) ffmpeg to extract the video into .avi container , you might be able to use avanti if you want a GUI

    ffmpeg -i i3.mov -vcodec copy -an video.avi

    2) ffmpeg to extract the aac audio

    ffmpeg -i i3.mov -an -vcodec copy audio.aac

    3) Avimux-gui to mux video + audio

    Cheers

Creating QuickTime files with DivX video inside is only possible on Apple Mac computers. The Windows version of QuickTime is not even able to play such files.
    Thanks for the update.

Btw, just found out that SUPER can do the A/V extraction too.
