Analog Capture of Video using Canopus ADVC110

I took the plunge and purchased a Canopus ADVC110 to try and capture the video from my big 8mm collection. I just installed it (easy enough) but am unsure how to get my PC to recognize the video. I tried using WinDV - no luck. I tried Windows Movie Maker - nothing. What am I donig wrong and what can I use to get this video into my PC? I've checked the wiring connections and although the video plug is a little loose, I don't think that is the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS I have captured DV video from my Sony DV camcorder before, but getting analog into my machine is new to me.

WinDV will work and is the best way to transfer the DV avi video from the 110 to your PC HDD. I assume you are using a firewire and that your firewire port is known to be functioning properly.

Describe in more detail what you have done so far.

Well, basically I

1) just plugged in the firewire intot he back of the unit and then the PC.
2) said NO to the machine asking if I wanted to record video using Movie Maker.
3) changed the input to analog (from factory set digital)
4) connected my old Minolta 8mm camcorder with the provided analog cables to both the camcoder and the Canous (I just connected the minolta to my tv with the cables to make sure they are ok - the picture and sound came through fine on the tv so it's not the wires)
5) Started WinDV and make a folder "Test" and file name of "Test1"
6) Pressed capture on WinDV and went over and pressed play on the Minolta (after making sure I set it to playback and not record)
7) Nothing happened on the pc but the Minolta played fine.
eight) Re-did step 6 but first started the MInolta before starting WinDV - no luck.

Am I missing something?

I just connected an SVHS cable connection from the Minolta to the Canopus and the video is coming through fine via WinDV. It seems that this unit has a balky analog video in port (the yellow cable).

Should I be concerned about this?

I use a ACDV100 along with a VCR and WinDV.
Seems to be a proper sequence in which to initiate these three items
for the capture to work.

I suspect you have the same situation. Try diferent sequencing before you
worry about a bad port.
