SureThing Labeler 4 was the software that shipped with my HP Lightscribe. Check their web site and see if it suits you. Not bad IMO.

Agreed, Sure Thing Labeler has always been the best labeling software available. Nero's is OK at best, but even freeware labelers or MS Office Templates are easier to work with and more reliable to print properly.

You also can try the Sure Thing Labeler before you buy.

Sure Thing Labeler is a good app =- but i heard some compatabilty issues with some lightscribe , though if they shipped it with the drive .... SHOULD work (drives have been known to ship with software that doesnt work with the drive)

This is very true. I recommend trying it before you buy it. Sure Thing also recommends this.

  9. Contrary to popular belief the Nero LS prints are pretty good, especially when you activate the best quality in the print settings.

Sure they look good, but try to import 3 or 4 images directly from your scanner and then align them properly with text as well. It's a chore in Nero, whereas ST does it much easier.

  14. Sure Thing seems to work pretty good... but honestly I still like to create images in Photoshop and save them as a jpeg then import over to Sure thing.

  15. I have the Sure Thing Labeling software--shipped with my HP Lightscribe DVD writer. It worked the first time I used it, but now it tells me there is a communication problem with the writer. I have no problem burning CDs or DVDs on the Writer, only using the Lightscribe function. Can anyone recommend a labeling software other than Sure Thing?

    FinChase,

I don't think that it is SureThing causing the communications error. If I'm right, the burner MAY be going out (mine did shortly after getting these error messages), or the driver is corrupted, maybe try a re-install, especially if it is the dvd640i or dvd640e. I believe the newer 740 and 840 models are more stable.

Lightscribe works by emulating the old HP Laserjet printer driver (with some modifications of course). It is an ingenious idea, but technically not really that big of a deal.

    SureThing is NOT that complicated.

Well, I bought the HP740e and exactly after updating the lightscribe driver from v.1.41.3.1 to v.1.67.4.1 (the same day I bought the burner) Windows began having problems recognizing it. It messaged that an USB device can't be recognized due to a malfunction of said device. But if I unplug and reconnect power from the 740e it is sensed and recognized by Windows. I have burned a couple of discs (DVD+RW and CD-R) without problems. I suspect this is more a software (lightscribe) problem. Tried to revert to v.1.41.3.1 with System Restore but System Restore is unable to do it (even in Safe Mode). Has somebody experienced this problem?

there is a firmware upgrade for that drive you may want to try, separate from the lightscribe driver.

I distinctly remember having that issue but after fiddling with the re-seating the usb cable, and removing and then re-installing the drive in the hardware manager, everything seemed to work fine. No problems.

I updated to the latest firmware (v. HPJ2 or something alike) before all the problem ocurred. What do you mean with re-seating the USB cable, and how do you re-install a plug&play drive using the hardware manager? I thought plug & play peripherals didin't have drivers installed into Windows.

USB P&P devices use device drivers!

I currently have 7 usb devices hooked up to my cpu. There are only three points of failure I have found over the years that have negatively impacted my setup.

    1.
The physical point at which the usb cable from the device connects to the cpu. Although the usb cable appeared to be seated properly in the cpu port, I only had a partial connection which gave me all kinds of sporadic errors. By removing the cable, blowing out the port with compressed air, and carefully re-seating or re-inserting the cable, my connection was corrected.

    2.
A bad power supply on a usb device. I didn't believe this one at first until I worked on it with my service techs over a 48 hour period. The errors were pointing to a software driver issue. BUT, it was the power supply that was causing interference with the rest of the device and generating the errors. After replacing the power supply, everything worked fine.

    3.
A corrupted usb connection or device driver. If you unplug your device from the system, go into the hardware manager and remove the device, shutdown your machine, re-attach the device, and then reboot your machine, this will occasionally fix the problem.

    Hope this helps.
