Vcd's conversion for the most part are a right pain ... simple for those who can afford hardware to deal with them ... but most dont .

You will need 40 gigabyte's of space on hard drive .

My way is to extract the mpeg using vcdgear first .
Open mpeg in movie maker , when done , save project now .

It has a habit of dropping it's gut's and running home to mummy .

Build on timeline no more than 4 minute's of video at a time .
First part , also include next strating clip from second part .

Second clip , include last clip from previous output , and include starting clip from third part .

    Continue doing this .

Save each to pc as dv-avi , you may need dvconverter to convert them from dv1 to dv2 .

When first dv1 has been converted to dv2 , delete the original .

Close movie maker when done .

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open first clip in virtualdub , lock first frame , go to last frame of this clip , we will no remove that clip that start's the second dv file .

    In audio , choose full processing , check conversion is 48khz , 16bit , stereo .

    Now save as avi .

When first clip is done , you now open second dv clip , and delete the fisrt dv clip (not that new one you just created) .

Repeat the step's for second dv clip , remember we remove the end clip's as we go , this is so we can realign the movie perfectly with audio .

    Same process's , save as avi ... open dv 3 , delete original dv 2 clip .

    Repeat till all done .

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open first dv clip in vdub , then file "append video clip" , choose second dv clip .

Repeat "append video clip" , till all dv clip's have been connected .

Set video compressor to xvid , at around 900kbit .
Set audio compressor to mpeg layer 3 , stereo choose any between 4 and 6kbps .

Start frameserver , name file (remmember to include avi extension) .
Go to vdub's folder and double click on auxsetup , and install handler's .
Start bbmpeg , load that temp avi file , convert to mpeg1 .

Done to a point , audio should be in sync .

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When done , delete all non essential file's except this new mpeg file you created .

Yes , this dose's take time but the converted vcd's do retain much of the original quality , I deal mostly with non-compliant vcd's which have better picture quality ...

For me it's bang it in the home player and recorded it on the pc .

    From some source's :

File format support includes MOV, MP4, and M4V (Apple's DRM-protected video content). The iPod plays H.264 (Baseline Profile) video at up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, and 30 frames per second, as well as MPEG-4 (Simple Profile) at up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 by 480 pixels, and 30 fps. The stereo audio portions of videos are in 48-kHz AAC-LC format at up to 160 Kbps

My best guess would be to use mediacoder to convert it to ipod format as I seen that aac-lc there before ... will have to try one of my clip's and see what it dose actually playback in video audio ...

Go here : itune download (convert mpeg to supported format)

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

It's 34mb's and contain's updated version of quicktime player ...

  4. In my opinion, that's overkill. I convert the VCD to mpeg1, drag it into Vegas, and output it to whatever format it needs to be. It looks like crap usually, since it's coming from crap, but there's no reason to convert anything to DV-AVI.

bjs: WHY convert the mpg to dv and then back to mpg ???

vegas is also overkill if you don't own it.

just use super or videora ipod converter and convert the dat files directly to ipod.

Video.Google.Com and Archive.org are two that come to mind. with Videora iPod Converter, any other source is good, too.

[quote="Baldrick"]bjs: WHY convert the mpg to dv and then back to mpg ???

    Ok , why ?

Having converted these thing's many time's before ... I have found no other method that produce's almost the same video quality ... none using freeware anyway .

Secondly most user's are now using window's xp which contain's window's movie maker ... and as most will avoid using it , simply because it has a tendency to run home to mummy everytime it find's the going a little tough ... it dose allow the retention of video quality , even though it is saved as dv avi .... As I mentioned above , this is my reasoning .

Thirdly , all my vcd's used non standard mpeg's ... having a higher video bitrate than allowed by the standard's ... some if not all tool's have various problem's when it come's to dealing with the audio and keeping it in sync .

Four : Most program's , no matter how much they cost , do have bug's that I discover from time to time which prevent me from performing specific idea's or function's ... freeware is alway's better , and accesible to everybody , and at no cost .

Have you ever complained about a bug , or wanted a refund ?

Most companies or developer's run and hide , or feed user's with a load of bs ... hoping the user will just give up ... in most case's , they give up .

Freeware developer's are extremely approachable when it come's to issue's related to product's they have designed and released ... if you have problem's using it , they are only too happy to assist .

five : mpeg1 in most tool's I use for dvd authoring will not be accepted , and therefore need to be re-encode , same size , but output as mpeg2 , which is where good old bbmpeg come's handy .

As for vegas ... what a load of c**p it is ...

For vcd to ipod , you could try the freeware apple ipod program , it's 34mb's to download , however , there is no guarantee that the audio will remain in sync should your vcd's be using non standard mpeg's as I do ... that is why I convert my vcd mpeg's in this manner ... it kill's to bird's with one stone .

I can convert them later for ipod's , with a guarantee the audio will be in sync ... and now reauthor the mpeg's , now m2v with ac3 as minidvd's on cd or multiple's to dvd ... the quality retained in the picture is far better than any other method I have tried before .

6 : Someone has actually found a reasonable use for a near useless product from microsoft ...
