hi, i was wondering if i buy a 42" lcd then isnt it going to have to be a widescreen, lets say aload of my fiolms are in full screen, will my tv/dvdplayer give me an option to change it and still look good, i know my 28" crt lets me choose between 4:4 and 16:9 but it looks a little weird
also if i bought a really big rear screen projector tv can i sort out my widescreen dvd's to play in fullscreen
last but not least, will g-spot tell me if a disk is full screen or widescreen by just showing the details,
i am dealing with dvd-r's
thanks

Pretty much all larger screen TVs (LCD, Plasma, rear-pro) are widescreen. Fullscreen programmes will be displayed with bars up the left and right sides, or in osme cases, you will have the option to cut the top and bottom off the screen (not a great idea). 16:9 enhanced material will fill the screen left to right, but mat still have bars top and bottom depending on aspect ratio. 4:3 letterboxed material will have borders all the way around unless zoomed in. Some TVs can do this automatically, some can't.
When using g-spot, look at the aspect ratio. For DVD, if it is encoded 4:3 it is fullscreen or letterboxed. If it is 16:9 then it is widescreen. For avi material, 1.78 or wider is widescreen, less if fullscreen or pillarboxed.Read my blog here.

thanks, nowadyas u can never win, hopefully one day ill have a 40ft homecinema in my house
i guess i can always make a nice stick on frame to minimiza my distraction
last question, home cinema's. are they widescreen or full screen, are they big tv's or is there something speciual -
They are what you make them. Pretty much all large screen TVs - of all formats - as well as projectors, are widescreen. It is the way of the future - TV broadcasts are mostly widescreen in many parts of the world, DVD and it's successors. I have a lot of 4:3 material - old movies etc - in my collection, which is one of the reasons why I haven't yet upgraded to a 16:9 screen. My TV has 16:9 switching, so I can get the most from anamorphic DVDs as well as my older stuff. That, and because I believe plasma is the worst display technology available at the moment, and LCD is only now becoming acceptable. Good projectors - true, full resolution, HD projectors - are still AUS$15,000 - AUS$40,000.
Home cinema isn't a standard. It's what you can afford to throw together with your budget. If it is a 76cm widescreen CRT, then that is what it is for you.Read my blog here.
