Having mucked around with a few programs I have never had any problems cutting bits out of video clips (trimming parts of the start, end or in the middle etc).

Say I want to cut the first 5 seconds off a video and want it to start at an exact point. In all other programs I select somewhere near the point in the timeline and then go frame by frame until the exact point I want is there and mark it as the point to trim (set in, set out whatever the program calls it).

However whilst using vegas, all I can find is a play, stop and start/end buttons, no advance by frame button. So I end up zooming in to the timeline and trying my best to get the point I want. I cant get exact and its very clumsy.

I figure I must be missing something completely here as such a simple task seems very cumbersome.

Could someone direct me as to how to trim a video from exact frames in Sony Vegas 5?

    Thankyou

Zoom in once or twice, then use the cursor keys. Fully zoomed out they move around 3 frames per press. Zoom in twice and it is frame by frame

I tested it on a project I'm working on before posting. At full zoom out, cursor left and right moved 3 frames. At one level of zoom, 2 frames, and at two levels of zoom, 1 frame per press.

depends what mode you are in and if quantize is on -- but

    "Move one frame left/right

    Alt+Left or Right Arrow"

    always works

other wise arrow keys or number pad keys
