I am at the point (going through this site) trying to find a good brand of blank dvd's ,to the point im compleatly lost and bured out i can't think anymore.

I think i've narrowed it down to 3 brands, TDK, Maxell, or Sony.

My time limit is up as to which brand to get, i have a project that needs to start by Wenesday
The massive amount of info here is overwhelming

I have a new Memorex 16X Dual layer burner i picked up fo $70

it has 2 USB2 ports and 1 firewire

I'm pleading to everyone out there Help me decide the most reliable

  2. Taiyo Yuden...I won't use anything else unless it's just for a quick burn-and-use.

Narrow it down again to Verbatim and dump the Memorex writer for a NEC.

I paid less for my NEC 3520 than the original poster paid for his Memorex. It meant trashing an existing writer which was still under guarantee but it was well worth the cost. Best investment I ever made. No more coasters and I immediately managed to revive four DVD+RW and two CD-RW discs which had become unwritable.

I use Verbatim 16x DVD-R because they seem to play back on any machine, even the fussy ones. Infiniti 16x DVD-R is my second choice when I need a see-through hub.

  7. Taiyo Yuden. I could be wrong but is it possible that the Memorex burners are rebranded NEC's? Either way you can get an NEC for cheaper than $70 at Newegg.

  8. Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Sony all work good for me.

Or IOWs Made in Japan is usually good too.

  9. i know that they make decent media, but DON'T FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S SACRED AND HOLY use sony media i'd stick with the advise that was given here so far, use taiyo yuden......you can probably get them CHEAPER online than what you would pay at a store for the other brands......they also have an almost 0 percent failure rate........

You do not state where you are located (what country?)

I suspect you are in the US, based on a few clues, but I am not sure.

Regardless, I suggest you narrow your choices to two... both of which have been repeatedly mentioned above:

    -Taiyo Yuden
    -Verbatim

-IF you must buy in a store (you noted a deadline), then I would shop for Verbatim, and if price is an issue I would look for the 100-packs in a Sam's Club, if you have a membership, or have a friend with a membership. Otherwise, you can certainly find the Verbatims in MANY retailers, and they are a very "safe" choice. They use manufacturers which are considered "First Class Media," which is not true of most of the other names out there. Right now, in the US, these discs appear to consistently be Mitsubishi Chemicals, one of the two best.

If you cannot find Verbatim, Sony's Media is also considered to be in the "First Class" ranks.

Many of the other brand names you will find on the shelves use some manufacturers which are fine, but also use other manufacturers which are not so fine. Some of the other brand names use lousy manufacturers all of the time.

    ====

IF you can buy on-line, I would consider buying Taiyo Yudens, though. The cost will be even more reasonable -- typically 25 cents per disc to $40 cents per disc, depending on speed, and whether you need them to be printable, and whether you prefer cake boxes or can live with shrinkwrapped and taped bundles. And, they are every bit as good as the above. Some claim better, but I would not go that far. Safe places to purchase (in the US) include:

    www.Rima.com
    www.Supermediastore.com
    www.NewEgg.com

If everything else is in place, and you follow the best advice for burning, you can typically achive 100% success with either the Verbatims or the Taiyo Yudens, and avoid throwing out a certain percentage and labeling them as "coasters."

    My thoughts,

    -Bruce

Thanks to all the responce from everybody, this forum Rocks!

What Bruce has said in his post has sold me on buying 100 Taiyo Yuden from Supermediastore.com

Bruce i want to answer your questions:
    I live in Honolulu, Hawaii
After reading your post as well as all the others and reading more about the Supermediastore.com siore was real helpfull in making my desision to go with Taiyo Yuden.

Somebody said that the Memorex burner might be a NEC drive, he's right it is a NEC.

I feel much more confident about the burner and the media.

Quick question the burner is a 16X speed recorder, should i buy 16X or 8X media
and are the printable ones any better or worse than non printable ones? (i don't need printable) i just use a sharpe.
What im asking do the printable ones offer more protection than non printable ones?

Anyway i want to thank you for your help

Buy Taiyo Yuden 8x or 16x DVD-R discs from RIMA.COM

Currently a 50 pack of the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs are $17.00 + shipping and a 100 pack is $31.99 + shipping. These discs just have a plain shiny silver top with no writing on them. This makes them well suited for use with the Casio CW-50 thermal printer which is darn cheap at $78.00 allowing for a professional though simple looking print job. A friend does this and they look nice. I'm cheap and just use a sharpie marker LOL!

The next best media would be the 16x DVD-R Verbatim discs. These seem to be as good as Taiyo Yuden which is pretty amazing. Anyways I've seen these Verbatim 16x DVD-R discs in 25 packs and 50 packs at stores such as BEST BUY and OfficeMax. The 50 packs are often on sale for as little as $15.00 U.S. Dollars at OfficeMax BUT not this week ... in fact I looked through this week's SUNDAY paper and none of the usual suspects (BEST BUY, Circuit City, OfficeMax, Staples, etc.) have any Verbatim DVD discs on sale so if you need some DVD-R discs quickly you might as well go with the Taiyo Yuden blanks at RIMA.COM

They aren't really "printable" discs in the usual sense. They are just plain shiny top discs but that particular Casio printer works really well with them. Basically the Casio is limited to text and maybe a very simple logo. My buddy just uses simple text with the title of the movie or tv show etc. and it gives it a nice professional look without the need for a special expensive printable discs or an expensive disc printer. Plus it is a form of "thermal" printing so nothing rubs off like with an inkject disc printer.

You can a buy a fixer spray which prevents inkjet labels from rubbing off. 16x discs seem to be more reliable than 8x
