Do all DVD recorders have timeslip?
I want to buy a DV recorder only for this functionality.
I have seen some models that clearly state this.
I don't want to buy a recorder with a hard drive (which I assume ALL come with timeslip??) unless I have to.
I've seen some recorders that say they have VPS.
What is this? Is this timeslip?
Thanks.

JVC M100S doesn't have hard drive and should do time slip on DVD-RAM disks. I have M10S and it does that.
Some Pioneers without hard drive can do time slip on DVD-RW disks. -
Yes, the Pioneer DVR-225 has a timeslip function if you record in VR Mode on 2x DVD-RW media.

so... do *most* recorders have timeslip?
or is it just some of them?
thanks. -
It is a little unclear about what you mean by "timeslip". For example, Pioneer and Panasonic refer to playing back while recording as "chasing playback".
Panasonic refers to "timeslip" as a slightly different function which allows you to playback at a prescribed time earlier than the current recording time. You enter the time, such as 30 minutes, to start playback 30 minutes earlier than the present. Chasing playback starts at the beginning of the recording although you can fast forward to another time. Panasonic's "timeslip" also allows you to playback picture in picture, with the earlier recorded material full screen and the current recording in small screen.
There are some recorders that do not appear to be able to do either. Sony's RDR GX315 does not seem to be able at least from their manuals. -
The function varies from recorder to recorder, and, as has been pointed out, some offer the function under certain conditions (i.e. recording to an RW - yes, recording to an R - No).
Unless budget is a major constarint, I would seriously consdier a HDD model, as it gives you certain freedoms that you just don't get from one without, as well as removing the need to frantically look for a blank disc when you need to record something on the spur of the moment.Read my blog here.
