Howdy again all...been a bit since my last post....

Here is my new scenario. I have now gotten my system all set up with my new NLE (Vegas 6) and am absolutely loving it! However, I am beginning to see a problem down the road.

While the present project that I am working on as well as the one after that are all DV, the third project in line presently is a mix of DV and VHS capture. When you compound that with the fact that I have several generations of VHS video that my folks would like placed on DVD, you can only guess why I am back for more advice.

I have been perusing these boards like crazy and have gone over the following threads:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=277134&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=i

As well as several other that I did not write down.

In addition to the hardware configuration stated in my profile, I also have the following pieces of equipment:

    1) ADVC 300 (Although now not sure that I needed that...my bad)
    2) Sony DCR-PC110 (Looks to me like it does have composite passthrough)
    3) Old RCA Four Head VCR - not high end

With all of that being said/known, what is the best direction to proceed:

    1) Sounds like I am going to need a new VCR - ideally not one that costs a fortune. Advice? What about a TBC? Necessary?

    2) Does the ADVC300 serve any purpose for me or can I implement it at all? I.E., if I was to get a "decent" VCR and a stand alone TBC (no idea if that is the best option...just an example), does the 300 fit somewhere into that equation? One of the reasons I picked it up was the "unoficially" stated ability to help bypass mv. While not a problem in the near future, could be helpful down the road.

    3) Some of the tapes that I would like to capture will require some editing while others will require none. Thus the reaon I would like to get them onto the PC and not just onto a DVD through my recorder.

    4) I have read on other topics a variety of approaches to this subject regarding cheap/Cheap, cheap/easy, best easy, etc. If I was to classify where Ifall, I cetainly can not say I want to do it the absolute right way as I know that will cost thousands of dollars, but I don't necessarily want the Wal Mart special either as that will most likely affect me down the road.

Feel free to give me more links to look at. This post wasn't as forthcoming with questions as my first post was as digesting all of this information has almost left me confused at what even to ask. I am hopeful that some of the reposnses will guide me in some more focused questions.

As always, your help is greatly appreciated!

Best to practice with what you have.

The ADVC-300 is better than camcorder pass-through for the following reasons.

    - it will map 7.5 IRE setup to level 16 saving a processing step.
    - it has other proc amp functions to help match levels
    - it has a small amount of noise reduction (optional)
    - it has a line tbc (helpful)
    - it has a color bar that can be used for VCR calibration.
    - it can also feed the vegas timeline into the VCR at proper levels for further closed loop calibration.

The 300 is a good solution to get your VHS to DV format for editing in Vegas. A better VCR and stand alone TBC would be the next upgrade.

Yep, VHS>ADVC>Computer Via firewire or VHS>TBC>ADVC via firwire to computer. That's my capture setup at the moment and I can't be happier.

It produces the same DV format you get form the cam so nothing will change in that perspective.
