    hi guys, i was wondering if there was a tool to tell me the bps my dvd-r's are,

    its all very well watching on a 28" crt but it wont work for hdtv

    what sort of bps is good, also what other things do i need to look out for to determine if my dvd-r is good or bad quality

    lastly, is there a tool that can tell me whether my dvd is full screen, widescreen, 5.1 surround sound extera

    Well there are many tools. One simple way is to check out software like powerdvd. It has on screen display for "more information" or some language like that. It will give the video and audio details of the track your playing while you watch it. Also if you click on the info tab you'll get the resolution of the video and some other stuff.

    Check the TOOLS section to your left <-------- for more options.

    As far as picture quality for hdtv I can't tell you since I only have sdtv. But to hazard a guess I'd probably say 5000 and up. You can get higher bitrates when ripping by leaving off things like extras, commentary tracks, and foreign language tracks.
