    I plan to transfer my VHS casettes to DVD. I have used my WinFast TV Card to capture in uncompressed AVI, then used TMPGEnc to encode, then GUI for DVD authoring to author and then DVD Shrink. Is there any way that I can actually improve the quality of the product e.g. sharpness, colour, etc. Any free programmes that one can use?

    Depends on what you mean improve. You can adjust those with most editors, I don't have any free suggestions for you. If you really want to improve VHS you have to do it with hardware before it gets converted to digital. See the resoration forum for some more ideas.

    Well if your capturing to avi why not use virtualdub and frameserve to tmpgenc? That way you can use the numerous filters available for vitualdub and still output to tmpegenc via frameserving. Worth a look. There's tons of guides for virtualdub here and on the net.
    Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

    This sounds exactly what I was looking for. I downloaded VirtualDub and will use the filters and then use TMPGEnc. Only problem?! Is there an easy tutorial around to show one step by step how to use the VirtualDub filters. I was playing around a bit, and was able to preview the output, but was not actually able to convert. It must be simple, but I struggled.

    Thanks for the help

  5. Video -> Compression... select codec and parameters
    File -> Save as AVI

    To frameserve to TMPGEnc:
    File -> Start Frameserver
