    The subject says it all.
Whenever i try to convert xvid-files to dvd i end up with choppy sound,

when playing the dvd on my standalone dvd-player.
The xvid-files in question has got the following spesifications:

Framerate: 23.976 ( the one of the two types of ntsc-format that is

    not "normal" )
    Audio: 48000Hz 198 kb/s total (2 chnls) LAME3.96rà Mp3

Anyone know how i in the easiest and best way manage to get audio and

    video up to sync ?
When i tried to load the xvid-avi file in Tmpgenc Express the program

    freezes.
I have also tried several one-click program in order to solve the

    problem, without any success.
When i try to load the file in Avi2Dvd i get an "accesserror 00000000

    in module 000000000"
When i use Super Dvd Creator 9.0 i get sync problems
When i use VSO ConvertX to Dvd i get sync problems also.
I also tried to open the file in Virtual Dub ( the file is approx 350

mb ), and save it once more, but then i have to abort, since the output

file exeeds more than 20 Gb !!!!! and i dont have any more space in

this partition. Anyways..never used virtueal dub before either so...

But, i REALLY appreciate a nice walk-through on how to solve this

problem, since its been annoying me for such a long time.
    Would surely appreciate it.
    Best regards

There are dozens (probably hundreds) of posts that explain this. You need to replace the VBR Mp3 audio track with an uncompressed wav version when encoding. Open the avi in virtualdubmod. When you get the 'Improper VBR etc.' error, click Yes to re-write the header. Streams->Stream List. Right-click on the audio track and select Full Processing Mode. Right-click again and select Compression. Click on Uncompressed PCM. Click OK, then click on Save Wav. For a 90 minute avi you should get around 900mbs of audio. If you get a lot less than this, you either didn't re-write the header, or didn't choose uncompressed wav output.

When you load the avi into your encoder (don't use a one-click-wonder for this), tell the encoder to use the new audio file instead of the avi's audio. How you do this depends on the encoder, but most have an option to load an audio track seperately.

Assuming you don't do anything sill like change framerates or edit the video, your sync problems should be gone.

    Hello
    Thanx for the reply.
Is Virtualdubmob a different program than Virtualdub ?
Because i downloaded Virtualdub and tried just to "save" it as another file, but then i ended up with a file larger than 20 gb, so i had to abort the process due to lack of discplace. dID this before i wrote the post. But, i had never used the program before so i actually didnt know what i was doing, hehe...
But, i opened Virtualdub and got the "Improper Vbr", and also cliced yes to re-write the header. But, i didnt do the other stuff you mentioned though. Have to try it when i come back from work today. But, first i have to know if Virtualdubmod is a different program than Virtualdub ? Is that the case?

Whad kind of encoder do you recommend when im going to try to load the avi into the encoder ?

    Appreciate any answers.

Virtualdub is an open source project. A number of different versions now exist, sepcialising is different areas and having different strengths. They are all fundamentally the same, but have minor variations in interface design. Virtualdubmod was an amalgamation of the original Virtualdub and Virtualdubmpeg2. You can run both on the same platform if you wish.

My preference is virtualdubmod, but if you have virtualdub i believe you need to go to the audio ment and choose Full Processing Mode, then set your compression to Uncompressed PCM. The, from the File menu, choose Save Wav (Note, this is from memory, so it might not 100% accurate, but it will point you in the right direction).

The reason you were getting large files in your first attempt was because you had both audio and video set to full processing mode, and were creating an uncompressed avi file. Uncompressed video requires a lot of disk space. I suggest you read some virtualdub guides (found by going to the Virtualdub page in the tools section and scolling down)

It's basically the same app, with a few different features. If you get huge AVIs when saving, you probably have set video codec to no compression at all. If you don't want to do anything with the video, it should be set to direct stream.
But, the best solution for fixing all problems with converting AVI to DVD is not to do it at all. Get a DVD player with DivX / XviD support - some of them come really cheap these days, and sync probs can be really infuriating. For like Euro 40, you can forget all about them forever.

Ok. Thx for the tip. I will surely try this tonight.
Do you recommend a spesific encoder, when its time to "put the pieces together " ? Whats the best and "easiest" one you recon?

    Hi,

Here is a version of ConvertXtoDVD undergoing beta testing (not really public yet) but as it offers a new tool for fixing audio sync I though it might be nice to see if it fixes your problem.

    http://download.vso-software.fr/vsoConvertXtoDVD2_setup_208.exe

This is a way to adjust manually a stream offset.

    Add file to project
Expand segment, "source details", select the stream to offset and click once or hit F2 key, there adjust . More feature are coming here, but one step at a time.

My personal method (and others have their own methods and favorite tools) is as follows (this is nutshell, not details)

    1. Virtualdubmod -> strip out audio to uncompressed wav (if not AC3. If AC3, simple demux is needed)

    2. Avisynth -> blockbuster to smooth artifacts, resize to full D1, asharp to restore detail

    3. Frameserve (avisynth) to CCE to encode - multi-pass VBR

    4. Sound Forge to encode audio to AC3 2 channel (if not already AC3)

    5. DVD Lab Pro to bring it all together

    6. Prassi ONES to burn to DVD

    QED

Process takes around 4 - 5 hours all up for a 90 minute film. I usually let the encode run overnight (usually 3-4 hours for a 3 pass VBR), so basically it is 15 minutes to set up, let it run overnight, 30 minutes to encode audio and put it all together at the end.

    Hello
    Thx for the reply.
Now i have been using Virtualdub Mode to extract an approx 490 mb wav-file from the xvid-avi file. ( a movie of 45 minutes )
I now have the same avi-file as before in addition to the wav.-file.
But what encoder should i use to put these to "pieces" together?
I tried to open the 340 mb avi-file in tmpgenc express 3, but then the program just freezes.
Is it another program you recommend me to use?
Really appreciate an answer on this.

Clairew: Thanx for your tip also, but i have NO idea what values to set the Offset to, and if i should change the OFfset-value to only one of the two streams, or both of them. ( What is Offset anyways? )
Anysuggestions on what these values should be?

Appreciate answers from both you, and the other bloke answering me a little while ago.

    Best regards.

I don't use tmpgenc express, but I have used tmpgenc in th epast. It has the option to load a seperate audio file in place of the audio stream in the avi. If tmgenc doesn't off this function (the help files will tell if it does) then your other choice is to replace the vbr audio in the avi file using virtualdubmod.

Basically, Streams -> Stream List, left-click on the existing audio and then click on Disable. Click on Add, and add your new wav file. Make sure both audio and video are set to direct stream copy (audio : right-click on the stream list, Video : video menu), then save the results out as an avi. The file will be larger than old version, but only by a few hundred MBs. You can now load this into tmpgenc express and it should process OK.

guns1inger's last post should get you straightened out. MP3 VBR audio causes problems when trying to encode a video. Just changing the offset won't help. BTW, you can change the offset in Virtualdub. Offset is the period of time between when the video starts and the audio starts. Not exactly sure of the reason, but most video files have some.

If you still have sync problems after muxing the audio and video together in VD, then you might look into offset adjustments. The other common sync problem is different lengths of the video and audio. This will gradually cause the audio to drift out of sync as it plays. This is sometimes cured by 'shrinking' or expanding the time the audio file runs by using a audio editor. But in either case, you have to know the exact time of offset or 'shrink'.

I'm guessing TMPGEnc Express won't take elemental streams, which is separate video and audio, like TMPGEnc encoder can. Muxing them back together to a single file may be the way to get around that.

    Gunslinger:
    Thx for the tip.
I did what you said, using virtualdub mode. I disabled the audio in the avi-file, and chose to use the wav-file instead.
But, now i get some sparkling sound every other second, in addition to the lip-sync being way off. People continue talking even though their mouths are shot.....
    But, anyways...
I try now to open the new avi-file in tmpgenc express but i get an error message. The error message says:
"Cant open videopart of yy.avi, only the audiopart can be opened".
Any tip on how to solve these issues please?

To Redwudz: But, i did ( or at least i think so..) mix the audio and video-file togehter, as Gunslinger said, using Virtualdub mode, without making it work . Please explain the workaround you mentioned.

Clairew: I tried the beta version of ConvertXtoDVD you talked about, but i doesnt solve the problem im afraid. The only difference is that it takes 30-40 sec longer before the choppy sound start. IN addition, whatever i do its impossible to set the tv-format to 16:9.
Even though the original file is 16:9 and i manually make sure the output also should be 16:9, i end up with 4:3 !!
I would really appreciate if you could tell me how i use the offset-function in that program to end the problem.

    Hi Pellets,

sorry to have not been able to write back sooner.

First of all the 2.0 version was supposed to fix a lot of Pal NTSC conversion (with pulldown incorporated) and audio sync issues, but some still remain present and that is why in the 2.0.8 version vso is trying to do more to be able to correct these issues, an audio preview will soon be added to make this whole process easier, this is just the beginning so you might want to just wait.

So I will try and explain how the new feature currently works in ConvertXtoDVD with the help with the use of AVI-Mux GUI

    +add file to convertxtodvd convert,
notice this part of the log "Audio discrepancy in input stream at XXXX ms: YYYY ms of audio missing"
+ start a conversion that you will cancel after a few seconds after seeing info necessary in log (above)
+open the VOB file in the working folder with a VOB player (VLC, PowerDvd, ...)
+check if the video is in sync with the audio, change the offset value accordingly---to get an exact number of how much audio is offset (out of sync) download the free AVI-Mux GUI and orignal file to avi-mux select file and hit generate data source from file. the important number here is after the word delay ****ms

Now from the number found in the log of convertxtodvd "___,_ms of audio missing" and the number you get in AVI-GUI
    do this calculation

(delay'number' ms from AVI-Mux) - (number ___,_ms of audio missing from convertxtodvd)=________*and this number you enter into convertxtodvd under expanded "source details", select the stream to offset and click once or hit F2 key.

If one of these does help you out please let me know.

What version was giving your the tv format problems? I will investigate and report this to vso if still present in the 2.0.8 version now publically available.

    Hello
Thanx for the suggestion above. I havent tried it yet, but will do it during tonight, most probably. I will tell you how it went. Thanx for all the nice support.
The last conversion i tried was with version 2.0.8.117 ( as mentioned in my previous post ) and the sync-problem still occured after using that version.
It was with this version i also encountered the problem ( for the first time) with the tv-format. ( Mentioned above)

    Hello, once more
I also must say that i all the times i have been using your program I always have added 3 files. Sometimes 2, burt usually i have always added 3 files to the "project".
I have never added only one file, if that has anything to say.

    To Clairew :
I started out trying your tutorial above.
You say in the beginning of the tutorial that i should cancel the convertion after i run into the following message in the log:
"Audio discrepancy in input stream at XXXX ms: YYYY ms of audio missing"
But, i never encountered this message. I added 3 files into the program windows and started convertion, but never did see this message.
Below you can see the complete log i have from my conversion.
Hopefully you can tell me whats wrong by looking at this log:

As I mentioned in my post above about encode times I also very occasionally have this problem with XvidToDVD. When this happens I use TMPGEnc which has a nice easy time shift feature. The downside is it takesabout 3 times as long to encode and I dont understand most of the settings!

Personally, I believe you are doing something wrong when you try to extract the audio using virtualdub. I have used this method on dozens of files, and it has always resolved any potential sync problems.

    Hello
I now used VirtualDub once more to extract the audio as a wav-file.
    Thereafter i purchased Tmpgenc.
I started Tmpgenc and loaded the xvid-avi file. I also, at the same time, loaded the previously extracted wav-file.
I do the same for 2 other files.
Thereafter i add all these 3 files to a "new project" in VSO ConvertX to DVD, newest version.
Even though the choppy sound now are less noticable, its still there, and after 3-4 minutes out in the first episode its starting to get annoying.
gunsIinger: I really think i followed your instructions point-to-point.
    Any other tip?
    Best regards;

    Hi Pellets,

the audio is synchro with thevideo before conversion when watched with something like VLC, right? If it not synchro before conversion, convertxtodvd cannot make it any better, but if video/audio is fine before, it should be of the same quality after conversion.

So far vso has not run into any files not correctly dectecting audio synch problems that are not appearing in the log file---maybe yours is an out of the ordinary case. If you are willing to pursue, I think VSO would be interested in investigating the case. I suggest writing to them and mention this thread.

    Thanks,

    Hello again

Everything is ok when watching the files on my computer.
    Quite annoying i must say

AVS Videoconverter 4.3 manages to burn the files correctly though, without any problem.
The only thing is that the outputfiles with this program is a bit larger than with VSO, so that i only have room for 2 episodes one on dvd, instead of 3.
Since i have paid for the VSO-program also, i would have been nice that also this program might had worked.
Perhaps the vso-program shrinks the file to much? so that is the problem?

Select one files an an example, and tell me the runtime, and the size of the wav you produced. It is possible (I did it myself a couple of times in the early days) to create a wav with the VBR MP3 in it. The tell-tale sign is a smaller wav than expected. If you do this (and VDub won't tell you if you have), you will still get sync problems.

As for the size of ConvertXtoDVDs output, it uses a slightly different approach to other encoders, which often results in smaller file sizes than it's competitors, for equivelent quality of output (or damn near). It looks at the way the original was compressed, and uses some of this information when re-encoding. This has two advantages - one is speed, because it doesn't have to recalculate all the numbers, the other is file size. This is not the cause of the sync problems.

I have seen ConvertXtoDVD produce output with sync issues, but it is a rare event in my experience, especially when compared to other similar tools.

    Hello, again.
Now i tried the last version of VSO ConvertXtoDVD; version 2.0.9.119, and even this version didnt fix the problem.
I really appreciate any feedback on this.

I am sorry I don't know what else to suggest.

It seems to me that this fix has helped quite a few people but the new version isn't fixing every case.
