I am wanting to create a large avi file linking all my music videos. However each music video are of different codecs, different resolutions and possibly different bitrates.

Is Premiere the best package to link lots of 40MB videos to create a 650MB video file?

If your trying to create a regular DVD. A good solution for that is to convert each file to DVD compliant mpeg individually, selecting the best encode settings for each file. For example if it's 720x480 leave it 720x480 etc. Waht settings to use depends on each file.

Use a disc authoring app such as DVD Workshop which supports multiple VTS http://www.digitalfaq.com/authorburn/multivts.htm

You can just add them to the authoring app and select "do not convert compliat files.

The trouble with creating one giant file is that you need to select one setting which may work great with one of your individual files but badly with another.

However to answer your question providing the framerates are the same Any high end editing app should handle them fine. Download the trial and give try.

Oh no. Sorry. Not DVD. Just plain mpeg-1. No divx or any special codec. Just plain mpeg-1. I see that Premiere doesn't do mpeg-1 directly. I have to create a uncompressed export avi movie. then use tpegmg (or something) to mpeg-1 encode... is this right'#?

  6. It is always better to convert all the files individually to MPEG1 which you want and then join them together. This will ensure compatibility along with quality.

You can use TMPGEnc encoder to encode individual files to MPEG1 and use the "Merge&Cut" option under MPEG tools to join the files into one big MPEG file.

Vegas allows you to drag many different types of files to the timeline and render as whatever.
