  1. I have an BenQ DW400a DVD RW drive which recently stopped burning.... can't do it through XP (professional) or through burning software. Shows up in explorer as "DVD/CD-RW Drive" but when I pull files over it says either to insert a disk (if none is in it) or if a blank disk is in it I get an error that says "J:\not accessible, incorrect function" My NTI burning software just says "no supported drive detected" I can however use it as a regular DVD or CD drive and view files.
I have done the steps below which have not fixed it but I did verify that it is something with my system and not the burner.

Any other ideas of what I might check would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    STEPS TAKEN ALREADY
Firmware Update: B1LY then tried B1MY
Removed from device manager and rebooted
Checked IDE controller, made sure it was set to DMA and not PIO
Check ASPI Layer. Have 4.6.. tried 4.7 then switched back.
    Tested on another system. Worked.
Tested another working burner on this system. Didn’t work.

Try uninstalling, reinstalling your burning software.

Those two right there tell me it's in the software. Remove the drive and uninstall all burning and DVD/CD related software. Reboot with the drive reattached and reinstall only one piece of burning software.

  4. Actually it didnt work through XP when there was no burning software installed.
Also, when you rightmouse click on the drive there is no Record tab.
Could a piece of software have removed that tab?

There are 2 primary ways to burn in XP. With the built in burning software or with secondary burning software (like Nero for instance).

Since you appear to be trying to use only XP, you can try to do a system restore and find a date before this issue arose. You can boot from your XP cd and perform a repair, possibly it will fix/replace the corrupt file(s). Or you can reinstall the OS from scratch (most likely to work).

Aside from that, you can try to use a secondary program (such as Nero) which works independantly from the XP software.

note: XP actually uses a stripped version of Roxio which is known to have conflicts with other burning software.

Also, there is a registry key which enables/disables the built in burning function.
