I hate Norton A/V these days. It has a lot of bugs, it often fails to work properly, and it has started to let a lot of viruses slip through. I was a Norton user since the early 1990s, but no more.

For A/V, I now use AVG Free. Lower CPU usage, better database. Freeware.

For Firewall, Sunbelt Kerio 4. Freeware. Or $15 for a web-content-filtering edition (not bad!).

  4. I never had good luck with Sygate anyway. It never seemed to want to remember what you told it. It has been working fine on my mother's Win2000 machine though oddly enough. Maybe it has issues with XP. I also use Kerio, which is also no longer a freeware program last I checked. I think they put a stop to that in december. No new versions. I do like it far more that I ever like ZA though. ZA just seems so bloated and it gave me hell with various P2P programs, causing memory leaks.

I agree with LordSmurf... Norton has become bloatware, uses alot of resources, and is just not cost efficient IMHO.. I now use AVG home free version..has a 2 year subscription, automatically updates itself, and best of all, it's free..

I heard from a techie friend of mine that the microsoft mal ware removal tool removed critical parts of NAV over the last several months. This is only a rumor he had heard. He advised he heard it appled to the personal versions of Norton, bur was unsure of the corporate versions

And if you're a COMCAST subscriber, MCAFEE VirusScan and Personal Firewall Plus is TOTALLY FREE. Again, why bother with Norton!!!

  8. I've been using Avast Antivirus. I used to be a big Norton fan up until 2004 version. Actually I even tried 2005 version too, but it was worse. Very heavy memory and CPU usage. Norton Internet Security is even worse. It slowed down my system so much. At first I thought I needed a new system. Uninstalled it, and installed Avast Antivirus and Outpost Firewall, and my system ran so much faster! Norton was good back in DOS/Win98 days but not anymore.

You need to look into a trojan, virus, etc etc that is keeping Norton from activating.
    Scan in Safe Mode.
    Run CWShredder.
Download, install, update then run Spybot.
Download, install, update then run Ad-aware SE Personal Edition.
Look into an app called HijackThis and it's proper useage.
Disconnect your computer from the internet while scanning.
    Etc etc etc.

There are also a couple of bugs with Nortans that can produce this type of problem. Corrupt viirus database, failed install of updates and other things. Even have an audiology card installed can cause problems. When you try to enable it, what error code does it produce ? Look it up in their knowledge base for a range of possible solutions.

I use Norton's NIS 2005 and Sygate Personal Firewall and have never had a problem or infection. But I have seen your problem on a couple of Norton's installations. There are two reasons why I use still use Norton's 1. The firewall filtering is great when you have kids. Better than using Net Nanny or one of the other Christian funsamentalist based filters, and 2. I have had too many false positives and half repairs from AVG Free (version 7.x) on other installations to trust it on my main machine.

Spybot, SpywareBlaster and HijackThis are also a standard part of any build I do.

Sunbelt Software bought Kerio Firewall in December. Sunbelt Kerio 4 is the current version (in the future, the Firewall software may or may not carry the "Kerio" name). http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

It has the free one, or the $15 web-content-filtering one.

I find it works equally as good as Norton Firewall ever did, but the CPU/RAM usage is pretty much zero.

Norton A/V-Firewall 2003-2004-2005-2006 are all drags on the system, getting worse with each version. And the more you use LiveUpdate, the more trudgy the system would get. Corporate versions are not much different, really lags the CPU. As the versions went along, there were more and more bugs, and the activation/installed requirement was more oppressive as well (like Microsoft or TMPGEnc). It was not uncommon for Norton to crash my whole system and give BSOD on the 2004 and 2005 versions. There were also times where it failed to update properly. And at least one ocassion, I had a disk with a confirmed virus, and Norton said it was clean (yes, with the newest virus def update).

I'm not saying to get rid of Norton, but I am saying you may need to be open to the possibility. This action may be needed to get a system with a non-gluttonous and functional A/V and/or Firewall.

  12. NAV is becoming a pain in the ***. If you move its incons in Start Menu, it can't start itself. I think it's a shame.
Now I use Avast!. It seems very good until now.

Yes. Follow this advice remove the Trojan, Virus, Worm, etc etc that is called Norton Anti-Virus. It's a plague that should never be installed. It could be worse though, you could have opted for Norton system works in which case you'd have more than one bloatware, virus, trojan, worm floating around on your system.

Uninstall that POS Norton software today. Your computer will appreciate it.

You are running an enigma plain and simple. There are plenty of those in the reasonable and educated machinery of today.

I have been running the Norton Systemworks and Firewall package for the past 5-6 years, updating every year since then. Never had problems and my cpu usage shows the same as hech 54. Have not caught a virus or Trojan since using Norton. Running Windows XP on a Dell 8200.

I had a similar installtion issues a year or so back. I had to uninstall every Norton program on the PC first and make sure the windows firewall was off.

Then I had to re-install the various Norton software packs. Changed the order of the re-install and everything went fine. The anti-virus protection was active then.

  19. It could very well be a conflict with other applications on the PC that causes the high memory usage. I use to use Zone Alarm firewall and it worked fine for the longest time until I discovered the joy of P2P. Everytime Edonkey would load up my PC would eventually freeze because ZA started draining all my memory. Switched to Kerio and no more problems with P2P. Not all software can be tested with all other software. There could be some random little app causing leaks. It just happens that the app in question may be a popular one and used by many people.
