My Sony 400-disk & 5-disk changers play burned personal movies OK playing camcorder footage converted to movie and burned to DVD with Adobe Premiere.
But 'crash' when attempting to play back-up copies of movies created with DVD43 & Nero Recode2.
However my inexpensive Mintek player has no problem with these disks.

(By 'crash', I mean the players actually seem to get confused, without displaying an error message, they attempt to read the disk but will either skip to the next disk or simply freeze up or even turn themselves off.
The 400-disk player actually deleted most of saved information for the other disks stored in the player too!)

I used DVD43 and Nero Recode2 compressing movie onto single layer DVD+R Verbatim disk at maximum burn speed, using the higher quality burn settings and not removing any unwanted material from the movie such as special features, etc.

It seems to me that Sony players have some way to detect back-up copies of movies, and cause the player to have problems instead of just displaying an error code or ejecting disk.

    Any ideas ????

  2. slow the burn speed down,to the speed of maybe 8 .(i click "max" on some programmes, will burn 8speed verbatim media at 12speed)
    try dvd-r,not +r.
and try a disc with "movie only".
might want to use something other than enro, and dvd43.
try dvd2one or shrink to fit it to a dvd-r,and copy with copytodvd.
as for sony and a magic "backup detector" chip, thats just plain silly.

  3. My backups for the Sony 5 & 400 changers play fine. I use Shrink & Nero to burn or if the the disk doesn't need shrinking then I just use DVD Decrypter ISO read/write.

And of course the disks I create with TDA and burn with Nero play fine too.

I use + and - format just fine.

Also look for Titlewriter, it works fine with Sony 400 disc changers.

    Cheers

I suspect that it can't detect that they are back-ups, More likely the two programs you use are not creating proper structure on the DVD as the Sony expects.

    thanks for the guidance.
When would I need to use TDA or TITLEWRITER?
Don't the DVD movies have titles already, or is that why the DVD player does not play or even understand the disk?
(I did not see any guides to help on this, let me know of any please)

I have a Sony 400 disc changer also. I have problems with a few of my discs. The Sony is a little touchier than my other players. All the ones with problems had problems during burning. I went back to my slower 4X media and that cured it. I burned all with a Sony burner, so I thought that was a little strange to not be compatible. Most all are backups made with DVDShrink.

Anyway, I would try some different media. That's the easiest thing to change.

I wasn't quite clear, I suspect that TDA makes a more compatable DVD than Recode or Recode does something that the Sony's do not like. I have never had trouble with DVD Shrink 3.2 or TDA movies playing in my Sony's.

Actually mode DVDs do not have a title. On my Sony DVDs with a title or that I have titled will display title info on the LCD of the player. It could be just the title or whatever, if the title is longer than the display it scrolls.

Thus a DVD I backed up could be titled to show for example, using a short title and pulled from the air random for example only:
Showgirls, or Showgirls produced by Joe producer 1977, or Showgirls Unrated Version, or Showgirls Edited for content, or Showgirls Warning Don't watch kids!, or Showgirls, Rated 3.5 Stars or Showgirls not the movie, Cable PPV, or Showgirls XXX ripoff or, well you get the idea.

So in summary Try DVD Shrink instead of Recode as a test. I have had disks that failed the Nero compliance test before burning that I then ran through DVD Shrink in backup mode even though they needed no shrinking and they then passed Nero's check and played fine so DD Shrink does do some corrcting of errors. I use TDA for authoring if I only want the title and a Custom menu.

Titlewriter is not needed I just use as tool/toy?
DVDs do not ned a title to play OK, keep in mind a title on a DVD is separate from the Volume label.

    Good Luck
