    Hello,

When I had a PC, I used DivX Author to convert DVD to DivX (XviD), and to extract a clip from a full length .avi.

Now, I have a MAC, and am looking for something similar, preferably free or low-cost.

    Thank you.

    You might try AVIDemux.

Sadly Divx doesn't support Macs very well.

You might consider installing some VM software and installing Windows under it. There are some things that are just a lot easier to do under Windows. I've got a Mac at home too and I run VMware Fusion on it with Windows XP installed in the VM. I'm not real fond of the boot camp idea to get to Windows but that's just me. There may be free alternatives to Fusion but my work paid for it so that's what I use.

I just tested DivX Author on a Mac, and it works fine via Wine.

More information here: Software that does/doesn't run on Wine (run Windows apps in Mac OS X)
I just added this to that growing list.
It's specific to video, photo, audio and web software for Mac Wine.
Sample clips at that link --- source MPEG-2 + encoded .divx file, as proof of functionality.
No need for Bootcamp, VMWare, Parallels, etc.

So if you like it .... keep using it.

Thanks for the replies. I will keep Wine in mind. Just wondering, is there a MAC program that people like for doing the same things?

    Thank you.
