I have and use both a PC and a Mac.
I use Key Caps from time to time and find it very useful ..ie.. compared to the PC Character Map where you have to copy and paste .... useless tool. I am looking for the PC equivalent to the Mac desktop utility 'Key Caps'.
I did find a utility for the PC at (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Graphical_Text_Tools/PopChar_Win.html), not prepared to pay the price they are asking considering the number of times I use it.
Would really appreciate knowing if such a utility is available for the PC FREE.

You aren't using Character Map to its full capability. If you have a complex string to type, such as:
"These have accents and stuff: ÿòêÖv°¯¬v³|hgvªÒ"
you simply type the whole thing (including the plain text stuff) within Character Map and then do a single paste (you don't even need to do the copy part).
If you change the font listed in Character Map, then the mapped characters appear when you type.
From what I can tell, PopChar X is for the Mac and looks like a rip-off of Character Map - down to the magnifier.
