hi all. I think I may have messed up my ACM audio codecs. I had some codecs that i didn't want so i removed them using the "Sounds and Audio Devices" properties. I now know that was a mistake because i tried to reinstall the codecs, but they don't show up and won't install.
here are my computer specs
Windows Xp SP1
500mhz p2 celeron (terrible i know)
184 mb ram
thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

Look at RadLight Filter Manager - freeware utility from http://www.radlight.org/products/filter_manager/index.php
Can you see what audio codecs are installed - maybe you can see stuff that's been removed but is still registered within the ACM...
Report back with more info.

i checked with radlight filter manager and the codecs i'm looking for are not registered.

quartz.dll handles audio acm codecs and qcap.dll handles vfw codecs. I think you have unregistered quartz.dll (should still be there in system or system 32 folder). I think reregistering quartz.dll should solve your problem.

my problems are now solved. but i do have another question relating to ACM codecs. when i use them to encode audio for an avi file, the audio balance is off. the sound is not 50/50 for the left and right speaker. its more like 30/70. is there a way to fix this. its been like this before and after my problem.

RE: balance... would think that's a problem related to the source or playback end of things.
