dvd burner wont play or burn any dvd disc

my dvd burner wont play or burn any dvd discs since i last updated it firmware,it still burns and plays cds,cdrs,and cdrws,my burner is a nec 1300a and firmware is 1.0c,when i put a dvd into the tray and close it it makes this clicking sound and looks like it is going to play then stops,and when i try to burn a disk it says please insert an empty medium to write to.
any ideas what is wrong please

sorry i should of said i did downgrade to 1.0a and its still not working

Try an actual pressed DVD (store bought software / movie). If it can't read it, then it's most likely a hardware issue and time to get a new drive. Most of the drives use seperate lasers for cd and dvd. Also, usually when there is a problem with a firmware upgrade/downgrade, the whole drive becomes unusable, not just part of the drive.

More than likely this 4x4x16 single layer writer has seen it's day and the sun has set.

Its given up the ghost. good thing new ones only run $40 or so
