Been a while since i got into DVD burning.I'm on my second burner, the first being an old white Pioneer 2x with an older Pc.

Now the second i'm useing is a black Lite-On LDW-451S. Only did one firmware upgrade since i got it about 2-3 years ago and it performs rock solid. Great price too(about $50).

As for media i started off useing Princo because of the price, but realized down the road that it was TOTAL garbage when they turned into coasters. Now i use Ritek,a MUCH better quality and more reliable brand. Never had a Ritek mess up on me.

NEC ND 1300 A. Old, slow, but utterly reliable. You can see what hardware we have by using the "Computer Details" button above each post. (If the user has had the courtesy to fill it in.) As for media - what's cheapest at the moment, as I mostly do personal backups of discs I buy. (And never use the full 4.37 GB)

Plextor 708a my first dvd burner, a Pioneer 107d, (3) Benq 1620's, (3) Benq 1640's and a Liteon 411@811. All of these drives have a purpose. When I come across a disc that is unreadable due to scratches or read errors one of them will come through for me. I've found that the Plextor 708a drive is able to read the heavily scratched discs even though it takes long to rip it gets the job done.

I too started out using the cheap stuff Princo but quickly learned to use good quality dvd media like Taiyo Yuden, Maxell (made in japan) and Verbatim. I haven't had a problem using those good brands of media.

4.2 is my upper limit. Well away from the nasty stuff at the outer edge of cheap media. No coasters despite my relaxed "quality awareness".

My first burner was a Sony DRU-500A cost me £250 few years ago, and used Riteks.

Now I have Pioneer 109 XLC1 and only use Taiyo Yuden discs. I can burn the full 4.37 GB without noticing any degrading on the outer edges.

NEC 3500 with L&D TG firmware and I only burn Verbatim DVD+R at 16x and have never had any problems with either!

  9. I have 7 burners and they all do very well with YUDEN000 T02 at 8X. TY +R is the only media with which I have found this to be true. As well, it is better than any other media I have tried.

Ritek used to be a good option but everything they make is now suspect; I would not use it if it was free.
Still a few bugs in the system...

I couldn't agree more with chas0039's comment. The YUDEN000 T02 has been extremely consistent for me in every burner I have tried it in. I have a Pioneer dvr108, Benq 1620, LG GSA 4167B, NEC 3550 and a LG GWA 4082N. Addin work-related LiteOn's of the 3S family (1653s-1673s-1693s) all working very well with this media. In selected drives, I get just as good results with TYG02 or MCC 02RG20 but never the consistency across all burner models.

I had one of those on my old computer ... very nice burner but it didn't seem to like much media. I mostly used Taiyo Yuden DVD-R which seemed to burn best but I did have OK results with Sony DVD-R and TDK DVD-R but BeAll and ProDiscs were horrible with this burner.

My new computer came with a Pioneer 108 and I try to stick with Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R but lately I've bought some Sony 8x DVD-R and they seem to work OK ... I also have tried the Verbatim 16x DVD-R discs and they too seem to be very good.

I tend to burn no faster than 4x to 6x even though my burner can go much higher but with DVD Decrypter and/or ImgBurn my buffer levels go "crazy" ... up and down ... up and down ... up and down ... but if I stick at 4x or 6x I don't have that problem. It's only 8x plus when that issue pops up and yes I have proper settings like DMA etc.

    TYGO1 & TYGO2's @ 8X, and TYG03's @ 8 or 16X depending on the burner.

  16. NEC 3500, I only use TY, TYG01, TYG02, haven't tried TYG03s yet. I've used Prodisc in the past, over a year ago.

  17. Currently:

    Burner --> Pioneer DVR-A09XL
Media --> Verbatim 16X InkJet Printable DVD-R, 16X Verbatim InkJet Printable DVD+R, Taiyo-Yuden 52X CDRs, and Verbatim 52X (ProDisc) Silver InkJet Printable.

The burner works great. The media works great although I don't think I will buy the Verbatim (ProDisc) CDRs next time. Those CDRs have been fine so far, but I would rather go with ones that have a better reputation like more of the Taiyos or Verbatim DataLife SuperAZO CDRs.
