I am trying to convert an AVI into a medium playable by Quicktime (any will do), but when I put the file into the program, it registers as a MOV, not an AVI. Also, the Progress Tracker doesn't stop at 100%: it keeps going. And Quicktime won't recognize the new file!

Does anyone know what is going on? I was able to convert AVIs without any trouble when I first downloaded it...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Quicktime can play AVI files, it's the codecs used that's the problem. Try installing the DivX codec. (Or if you know what the codecs are, try telling what it is.)

Drop the file into fmpegX and press the "info" button. Let us know what it shows.

Sometimes th progress bar isn't right, but also if it shows "200%", you should let it continue, it mostly works normal, only the bar is weird. Wait until it shows "finished", because that's everytime right.

It will if you have the relevant Quicktime components installed, as Jacke mentioned above. My old G3 iBook isn't the best test bed for playing AVIs, but it still works.

Though, I don't remember if any of the components (including DivX's own) handle DivX 3 (DIV3)... or, if they do, whether or not they work with QT7.

Also, have you tried using VLC or MPlayer to play the file?

Yes, QT can play AVI on Macs but it depends upon the codec used (as AVI is a container file) and what versin of QT you have. I've seen a number of AVI's that are mis-encoded and by that I mean they are using some bizarre combination of codecs (video and audio) that make it more difficult (or impossible) to play in QT. However, if the AVI sticks with established standards, it will play in QT on an OSX Mac.

The "info" shows about what one would expect; nothing bizarre. You might want to try MPEG Streamclip; it seems to have luck doing things that ffmpegX might not (and vice versa).

I've got DIVX 6 and 3ivx D4 v4.5.1 in Library/Quicktime/. Perhaps you may need one or the other of these codecs. I don't know the links offhand but I'm sure a quick search up here will locate them.

Got VLC actually, but I want to open the file in Quicktime so I can convert it to iPod format.

If you only want to convert it to iPod format, you can also use ffmpegX!
Just choose the right preset (normally iPod h264) and click encode - ready is your iPod-movie (after some time of waiting of course! )
