I used Windows Movie Maker to capture my DV film the other day and it seemed to work pretty good except that it only has one codec that isnt wmv or asf and it takes a shit load more space then say WinDv does. I went ahead and saved it as a large file WMV and its fine except now i dont know how to edit it like i would if i could use Virtual Dub.
Anyone know how to add codecs to Windows Movie Maker?
Anyone know how to edit WMV's like you would other vids with Virtual Dub?

What are you trying to do?
WMM can acquire DV, edit in RGB and output to DV if you explore output formats carefully. Avoid WMV unless that is your goal.
Almost any other mainstream program is better than WMM in every way. The two I recommend are Sony Vegas Movie Studio and ULead Video Studio 9. Abobe Premiere Elements is good for DV to DVD but is limited for other tasks.
Virtualdub is good if you want to dip down into the tech of it all.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

the reason i am using WMM is because i can set it to record whole entire tape and walk away... WinDv seems to lockup and stuff when i walk away and the end of the tape comes. -
If you want to play with your wmv video in v/dub, install avisynth & create a text file with the avs extension in the same folder with your video. In the text file put the line: DirectShowSource("your_file.wmv")
using the name of your file. Open the avs file in V/Dub.
There are more parameters possible, see avisynth.org for details & download. But it will let you re-compress to whatever depending on codecs installed, and do quite a bit of editing, often at 3 or 4 times the speed of rendering in other editors. -

I have had no luck with those programs you listed...they always seem to operate so fricken slow its on real. I experience hangs and lock ups with them.... Sony Vegas didnt even work correctly....Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

"But why compress to WMV and then immediately decompress?"
I agree.
But if anything besides wmv is out of the question...
