  1. Hello guys!!!

I am having a huge problem!!!

I use my TV out Gforce mmx400 to watch movies in my TV (Sony Wega 34 inch).

Most of the time, they are divx, Xvid movies, that are played through BS Player.

At dark scenes mostly, it appears a lot of "squares" at the image. I guess they are called macroblocks (Am I right?).

Is there a way, or a filter function to avoid them while I am playing the movie????
    Wich filter?? ffdshow?? Wich settings?

    Than you!!!

Never seen a DivX/XviD AVI without that effect in dark areas. Can even be seen in commercial DVDs sometimes.

With movies available in DVD why in the hell are you going through all these contortions in order to watch movies that you know are crappy quality to begin with on your Great Sony TV. There is nothing available on Divx or Xvid legally or ilegally that even remotely compares to the original source. The only reason anyone would do this on purpose when direct DVD viewing is so easily possible is when the sources are converted commercial movies form P2P sources. Simply put they are mostly awfull. They are not encoded with a high enough bitrate so they feature a whole array of macroblocking, motion artifacts are you are seeing.

  4. Rabid DVD Shrink Also like to occasionally back up to Divx with Dr. Divx

Maybe you haven't read your sig recently. There are, of course, plenty of reasons to back up to AVI. Evidently you do it yourself sometimes. And since you also proudly and publicly proclaim your love for Shrink, this also seems to me to be a case of the pot calling the kettle black. I don't think fgtan's question had anything to do with whether or not he should be making AVIs, but how to get rid of the "black blocks".

As Mats said, this is one of the main drawbacks to MPEG-4 compression, especially at the relatively low bitrates required for compression to a CD or 2, as you mentioned. I might suggest a calibration of the TV set to minimize the blocks, which are more obvious if the contrast and brightness aren't set correctly. fgtan might also consider using higher resolutions and bitrates. And I don't know how he's doing the encoding, but keeping it in YV12 (using AviSynth) rather than converting colorspaces will also help. The MMX400 is a really lousy video card, but I don't know how important it is in causing the problem.

  5. Also try adjusting the black level of your graphics card's TV output.

If you carefully read what is being asked, he or she only wants to play back his movies and why he or she is seeing these macroblocks in dark areas. I do not see anywhere where he is talking about creating them avi Dvix or Xvid. So to me that indicates that he or she is refering to material already aquired and on hand through various other sources other than something made in ones own computer. And by the way, I guess is time to update my sig as I mostly only do DVD backups. No more Divx for me. Well maybe HD 1280 x 720 Divx.

Yes I do love shrink which even though it does "Shrink" the results at least for me are always excellent. I view them on my 52" HD DLP set.

  7. OK, just adding more inf...

I do not make the avi files...I get ready p2...

I know that the most intelligent thing to do is to watch it straight from the DVD media, from a dvd equipment and discard the pc tv out option...but the movies take too long to be released in DVD in the country I live in...

I know and understand perfectly the difference between a DVD and a Divx-Xvid...avi. I just do not want to wait too long to watch the movies...

And, avoiding this black squares would really be a great improovement.
    Cause they really suck!!!

    Thank you all.
