Well since i pretty much appear set to go off to college soon, i'm wondering about laptop options. I love my current desktop setup but don't think i'd want to lug it into a small dormroom.

I'm not a Pc-gamer and only use my current Pc for basic applications. As long as the laptop had at least these features or better, i'd be plenty happy:

    WinXP
    Processor: 1 Ghz speed
    CPU type: Does not matter(intel,AMD,etc.)
    Ram: 128MB
    HDD: 10GB(preferbley 15-20GBs)
    Video: Standard intergrated graphics&audio
    Modem: 56k
    Drive: CD-Rom(preferabley DVD-Rom)
    Price: Less than $500

As you can see i'm not a picky user at all,i require only the basics. So whats a good,cheap,entry-level laptop brand out there? Specific links would be nice please

Here is what you do. Watch the ads. Every few months you'll see a system on sale for around $550 to $650 after rebates that is very nice. Snag it, be happy. Stick with the name brands and you'll be okay.

There are some, for some reason ABS has redesigned their site and hidden all the barebone notebooks.

edit: nope thats all of them. So uhm... there ya go.

    Visit a site called laptopcloseout.com

I picked up two laptops before the holiday season for a couple customers looking for kids laptops. I got two 1.1Ghz P3, 256MB, 30GB, DVD, 56K, 10/100LAN for $350 a piece. They may still have good sales on cheapo laptops.

Those are all prices without CPU, RAM, HDD, or Optical. Barebones indeed.

Thanks for the site. Saw some good ones like an IBM Pentium III 900Mhz for $379 and nicer Toshiba 1.1Ghz for $479.
